Show off your reskins!

The Delaware Atlantic Railway (DA) is a fictional regional railroad operating in the states of Delaware and Pennsylvania in the mid-1980's. So far, the roster contains RS18U's, GP38-2's, and U18B's.

Currently, GP38-2's 3800-3825 are the only locomotives to have the Delaware State Flag on them.

I have no plans to upload that KCS SD40-2 to the DLS. I actually really want to just delete it from my game. (in fact, I'm going to do that right now...)

Kid, don't let them discourage you. They just think that beginner's reskins can't look good. It's a pretty decent reskin, if i do say so myself. Not perfect, but better than what i could do when i first started! ;)

After so much use with an early and not-so-great skin, the SLRR SD40-2 needed to be redone.
So that's what I've done here!

OLD: The old SD40-2 served its purpose well, but it really needed some work. It was done sloppily and without the use of any kind of tools to help things look right. You can see in both pictures, there was bits of black that went a little above or below the actual lines, which was not intended.
Here you can see some of that extra bits of black that weren't done correct. I didn't know about that handy box tool in GIMP at the time...

Another problem with this skin was certain parts of the detail were cut straight off. Not redone in a darker or lighter colour nor added back period.

NEW: This version is better than the old. The black lines are straighter now, no more little random spots on the edges, and looks neater overall. As well, the primary text on the side has been changed. It now says "Silver Lines Railroad", even with the italics! The lenny face on the bottom has been removed, as well.

I might think of only bolding or making the font larger on the primary text on the sides, as well as make the patch on the cab smaller.

Cheers,

Just an idea here but it looks like your upper black stripe is on the same path as the hood latches. A simple fix would be to raise or lower the stripe and the overlap will disappear.

Looks like the CITX ex-CR SD40-2 on JR CC, but with black stripes and "SLRR" instead of "CITX".

Oooo~!!! Now that looks quite fantastic! :udrool:

Those Metro-North F40PH-3Cs are some of the regulars I encounter on my Port Jervis line, and I believe I had one on my train out of Hoboken on Friday...

Hmmm... I may have to buy one of JR's F40PHs now...

Anyway, you've done it justice!

I just thought I would make a list of Helpful Hints for reskinning, for beginners.

1. Zooming in to when you can see individual pixels can be helpful.
2. When you put text on something, use airbrush to lightly texture the base color over the writing to make it look less bright.
3. For weathering, use airbrush set to 20-50% opacity.

Feel free to respond with more hints, so we can have a big list for everyone to use.

Just a word of advice. KEEP ALL UR RESKINS. I've done probably 2000-2500 over the years, and my favorites are some of the oldest. I remember the old PVRR (Not to be confused with PVRX) back when I was running it on my first route. Granted I've updated the textures, but I love em. Never lost interest and never felt bad about them. If you keep going and learning your own tricks every so often, you'll look back and say "Damn....what the hell was I thinking when I did these...". Thats how I felt about the FEC SD70M-2's I skinned (they are on the DLS). Those were my first full blown skins. Before that, all I did was patch jobs and what not. I still to this day play with the old FEC SD70's. Sure, they don't look all to great when compared with JR's, but to hell with JR's, them ones from 2011 are my favorites! Sorry for the lengthy comment, but you'll understand in the future....I hope....
