gimp = poor man's PS it's essentially the same tools wrapped up in a different package. I still prefer PS to gimp but I don't have a couple thousand to spend on a license for all of the Adobe tools I want.

I use "PhotoImpact" which was from Ulead and now Corel. It's a bit buggy, but it does what Photoshop does (and uses PS plugins) and was < $100 when I bought it last year.

I got "stuck" on that path years ago when I got an SE edition "free" with something-or-another - This got me used to how PI does things, making me hesitant to switch to anything else...
