Should I upgrade from TRS 2009 to TRS 2012?

Hey all,

I was notified by the Trainz program that TRS 2012 is out. I was wondering what new features in TRS 2012 there are, and if its worth getting? I ask because of my experience upgrading from TRS 2006 to TRS 2009.

Pros of upgrading from TRS 2006 to TRS 2009:

1. 5m baseboards
2. "Replace Assets" feature
3. Better memory usage with textures and such.
4. More functionality like ditch lights, scripted train actions, and signals.

Cons:

1. A lot of assets are red highlighted.
2. It was somewhat cumbersome transferring TRS 2006 assets into TRS 2009.
3. Not so many "new" content created for 2009 as there is for 2006.

I'd like to know what to expect if I upgrade again from TRS 2009 to TRS 2012. Is it buggy? Easy to transfer assets from older Trainz versions to 2012? More content that doesn't exist in 2009 and older? Better animations, memory usage, scripts, etc.? What issues are there, if any?

Please let me know. Thanks!

12 has a couple of really nice routes in it, but if you are comfortable in 2009, and don't enjoy fixing things again, I would pass on the upgrade for now.;)

I've seen the zoom out to satellite view (goes to map mode) . That's way cool....I might buy TS2012 at xmas if I haven't been banned from the forum by then :p

So the satellite view and the 2 new routes are the only new features so far between TRS 2009 and TRS 2012?

I think the information concerning the differences is readily found, but you are asking opinions...correct?
If you don't enjoy the fixing and the meddling, then stay where you are, others have said the same in different threads here. I like 12 myself, but I'm not bringing any luggage from past versions with me, and I'm using it basically to just create content. You, on the other hand have already made it clear you didn't relish the work you have already done to get up to 2009.

Go with your first instinct, there's nothing so earth shakingly different about 12 to warrant you fixing more at this time.

I'd says that this is heavily dependant on what you want to do with Trainz.

If you play the built-in routes, then TS2010 and TS12 have a huge amount of value and go way beyond the older products.

If you want improved graphics and performance, the new versions have a lot to offer.

If you want access to the new content, features, tools, multiplayer, etc. then it's worth upgrading.

If all you want to do is keep playing the same game as you have now, then there's not a lot of need to upgrade until support for TS2009 ends.

cheers,

chris
