Should I buy TRS19 or jump to 22?

Hi there. This has been on my mind for quite some time. Since TANE is now considered to be out of support and a lot more creators only producing assets for TRS19+ I am considering if I should acquire a copy of TRS19. But since 22 has released I’m concerned over if 19 is still alive in terms of content and updates.
I usually like to not skip versions when obtaining new games. Like is there any benefits to get 19 over 22 or should I just skip buying 19 and just get 22. I’m concerned over content/DLC compatability. Like when I made the move from TS12 to TANE and went through the process of porting over my content folders, lots of missing deps and for whatever reason iirc some of my TS12 payware DLC was not recognised by TANE resulting in me having to re-buy some things for dependencies. I also do not have any interest in getting Trainz Plus because I prefer to actually own my stuff with one time purchases rather than the “rental” model that Plus revolves around.
 
I would go right for TRS22 Platinum Edition. It's the best of both worlds, meaning you get the new Surveyor 2.0 and you get to dabble with HD Terrain, although it's not the full version it allows you to load up existing HD Terrain routes and also gives you the Universal-Driver-Surveyor (UDS) which is really great for route testing and building as well as unknotting AI during driving sessions.

Regular TRS22 is really basic unlike this version and of course the Plus subscription series such as Gold which you are not interested in.

It does also exist in Platinum but with a caveat. The user can't create a route using HD Terrain but can edit a route, and when a route is edited, it's converted to the 5 m grid. IMHO this is more like read-only because editing a route in 5m grid that was textured in HD Terrain will end up with weird texture issues based on my experience of going from 10 m to 5 m on an existing route.

Yeah...Converting a 10m to 5 always screws up the textures, and if you strip the textures after converting to 5m the terrain is "saw toothed". Not ideal.
 
I have TRS 2019 and moved to TRS 2022 PE and was worth it to me. There was a noticeable difference in the performance of the newer over the older version.
Just my observation, not a suggestion.
 
If you could buy a new 2022 Corvette, for the same price as a new 2019 Corvette, which one would you choose???

Go Trainz Plus. It allows you access to HD terrain which is a significant advance and the way forward for those with the patience to use it. Lots of other features too, though Surveyor 2.0 has a steep learning curve.

Thanks for all your input. Looking at the official Trainz store with everyone suggesting PE. The price is a little eye-watering. Also being a digital only is kind of a bummer since so far I’ve got physical copies of all my Trainz products. Although TANE’s DRM is worrying. I always worry about the future, assuming I still even am playing Trainz by then, if the worst was to happen and N3V was to go defunct, servers shutdown, etc. Would they manage to push out a final patch to deactivate the DRM systems so that players would not lose access to their legally-purchased software?
 
You might hope for another sale. They had two sales recently and 22PE was very reasonable. I bought on the first sale and it was even lower on the second sale.
 
So I learned today that TRS22 Steam edition is having a huge sale.
I actually am considering if I should go for it since I don't know about the caveats associated with the Steam version.
Will any of my trainz store-bought TANE DLC transfer over or will 22s DRM insist that I re-buy the steam versions of said DLCs? Like is there a special link made between my Steam and MyTrainz accounts for DLC authentication?
 
It is to my knowledge that none of your TANE DLC that you purchase will port over to your copy of TRS22. Same with TRS19. I also never buy DLC from the Trainz store, however due to my steam dlc not being ported over from TANE/19 to my Trainz 22 from N3V's site. I assume that it would be the same way between steam purchased dlc and N3V purchased DLC.

If you’re planning on transferring routes from older Trainz versions, I’d suggest buying the standard ts19 (at $20) as an intermediate step. I’ve found some routes for ts19 that are ok, but have missing assets in Trainz plus…
 
I caved in. Picked up TRS22 PE on Steam for just £13.81. Currently am going to wait before I install since I need to do some cleaning to free up some hard drive space for it. Then when I do install it there will probably be the joy of importing all my non-DLS content from TANE over to see what is broken and what is missing deps. I mean I've done it before, When I moved from TS2009 to TS12 then from TS12 to TANE.
 
Bought a TS22 Standard today on Steam. All DLC from TANE N3V (Trainz Store) and TS19 Steam have been transferred to TS22.

Many thanks for this info about the Steam codes in the TRS22
Now we all know how to identify these codes.
One of them identified is Sebino Lake, Italy so now it is possible to transfer any purchased TRS2019 stuff into TRS22 SP4 (build 126295).
One also received a 30 day free FCT pass for fast downloads to update the TRS22 product.
There were over 790 kuid assets updated for TRS22 from the DLS very fast download.
No problems at all with the installed packages, now to test out the software and have fun.
