Set Max Speed to Command Problem

When I use the "Set Max Speed to" command <kuid2:450022:90001:2>, the AI trains travel a little below the limit I have set. For example, I have a train set to 70 MPH, but he will only go to about 65 MPH. Is there a workaround for this? Not the biggest deal in the world, I know.

The obvious question to ask is what is the maximum allowed speed for that particular loco asset? Some locos (and rolling stock assets) have a maximum speed built into their config.txt file. The tag "max_permitted_speed-60850" sets the maximum allowed speed for that rolling stock asset.

I have a route where the loco has a maximum set speed of 47mph and it will not exceed that speed for track with a speed limit of 50mph (or greater) or when the Set Max Speed command is set to a higher speed.

PS: Don't forget that there are two versions of the Set Max Speed To driver command - one for MPH and the other for KM/H

The top speed for the loco is 70 MPH. I tested the train without the speed limit command, and he went the full 70 MPH. Also, when I set the top speed to 50 mph, it will still go a few MPH lower than the command.

Yes, I did make sure I was using the MPH version of it

Does the same thing happen to other types of locos or is it just specific to this loco?

Does the loco have the max-speed permitted tag in its config somewhere set to 65?

Another issue with this command is that whenever you leave the session it no longer works. Whenever you stop the train, it must be added back again. Hopefully this will be fixed.

That's true of any driver command. You need to add the command back in because the driver has already executed the command prior to you exiting the driver session. If you exited before the command was executed, it would still be there.

The difference would be a rule which is persistent throughout a session even if you exit and come in. There's a similarly named rule that requires editing the config.txt files and adding in a tag somewhere. I can't remember what it's called offhand.

The rule was meant to simulate specifically braked rolling stock on UK and Australian railways and isn't really appropriate to what you'd want to do because placing a slower configured freight car in a consist meant to travel at a faster speed will slow down everything else, besides editing all the freight cars that you have installed is something you don't want to get into.

What about me switching to between surveyor and driver? The command will expire even after doing that. Is that also normal?

That shouldn't occur if you create a driving session using the Session editor (Surveyor in Session editing mode). This will ensure that the command is always in the session if you restart it again from scratch. If you are using UDS, then there's a possibility that the driver has already executed the command when you've edited and returned to the session again.

The command works by executing and disappearing just like any other command. I used it in the past to keep my coal drags from going 70 mph on my mainline by placing the command as the first one after I've had a consist exit a portal, waited 20 seconds, loaded up engines with fuel using instant load locos, and instant load commodities before driving off using the Copy Commands from... Schedule Library command.

What I meant was AI will think they can go faster than the speed limit I placed on them beforehand.

That could be a bug then. I need to try it when I get a chance, but I rarely restart a driving session once I've been driving.

Just an FYI. If you alter the route or original session in any way while you have a driven session saved, things can either not work at all, or you'll end up with things out of sync.

I liked the TANE setup better.

In TANE there was a train button, the F7 tab. That's what allowed us to add trains on our session without being forced to use surveyor mode.
Yes, I remember that now. I tested that feature prior to SP3 being released with it when I was part of the Trainz Dev team and that was one of the best features we ever had, I think. We were greatly disappointed when that disappeared from TRS19 and was replaced with UDS.

Back then, we did some behind the scenes testing of new features, without an NDA, and were able to report excitedly about the upcoming features.

A few things, such as that and Multiplayer Surveyor were among the things that made it through the gates in those days. It was great fun and much different than what we have today with beta testing.
