I have used the search option and looked for youtube vids but I can't find a comprehensive tutorial on putting sessions together. Can anyone point me to a few threads? Thanks.

Thats a fairly broad topic to cover in one "comprehensive" video. The first thing to know is there are three kinds:

1) A Default session: Has the rolling stock placement and rules which you assign to a route by default (those deemed inseparable from the route). Typically a route will have one of these.
2) A Variant session: Appending the default session and the default route with specific rolling stock placement, scenery and track additions, and rules to concentrate on specific operating tasks. Typically a route will have a few of these.
3) A Saved session: A file which contains the saved progress of one of the above sessions in progress. It is somewhat self-sufficient in that the original route and parent session are not reloaded (but the balance of required assets must be available). Most importantly, it cannot be edited, but can be operated going forward from the saved configuration. You can add trains and drivers using the quickdrive facility.

Also fundamental to know is that TS12 has at least one layer for the route and at least one for your default session when you create a new route.

The first step is make a route with a default session. I am sure many videos will be cited for you herein by the community.
