I`ve read a few threads on this and haven`t seen an answer to my problem. I`m trying to install the service packs for ts2009 starting with sp1 and ending up at sp3. When I click the link,hit run and after it downloads a screen pops up for "my computer" and it wants me to pick a file location for it and if I exit out of it there`s another screen that says it can`t find the installation path and location. So what do I have to do to install this stuff. Also, how do the automatic updates work? I use 2006 but after recent announcements I want my 2009 up to date for future use.

No, I don't have an answer to your problem, BUT I am having a similar problem. I download SP1. Then I run update. But it says

I had to do the patching process for TS2009 myself a few days ago - the service packs will need to be installed in order.
Just out of interest, which edition (UK,US,AU(Auran version),etc) of TS2009 are you running? If it is not the auran version, you may need to download SP1 from the website of the company who distributed it (for me, this was Just Trains). If it is the auran version, it may be worth a look on the http://ts2009.com website (under service packs)
During installation of SP1, it will ask where Trainz is kept (as you have probably noticed) - further service packs will make use of the information from the SP1 install.
You will need to select the folder where Trainz.exe is kept (in TS2009, there are 2 copies of Trainz.exe - one is the launcher, and the other is the actual program) - mine was in C:\Program Files (x86)\TrainzSimulator2009 - yours will probably vary from that slightly.
If a File Open box appears, you will need to select the Trainz.exe file (which will be in a similar or same place as specified above) - you will need to select it, then click Open. (It is essential that you select the one in the Trainz installation folder, not the one in Bin). Once done, it will flash up more messages, then you may need to click Apply Update. (It could take from 30 minutes - 1 hour+ to do the patch)

Don't know about SP3, but there are apparently SP2 patches for multiple TS2009 versions, from retail version through SP1.

So it's possible to skip installing SP1 for TS2009 and install SP2 instead.

If you have entered all the details into the Trainz Options box (username/password) and into CM2, as long as you have registered the serial number, it will either update automatically (if the tick box on the developer tab is ticked) or you can click 'Patch Trainz' (if available) - this will bring it up to SP3 (This time, it will happen without intervention being required (apart from clicking one or two buttons)
Once done, it should bring it up to SP3 (build 41844)

I installed sp1 to take it up to build 38599.When I launched the game it wouldn`t do the auto update to sp2 sayin that I had to update to directx 9, even though i have directx 10. When I tried to play the game it says that C:\program files\auran\ts2009\bin\render3D extension_7c.dll is defective and won`t load the game. I went into cmp and let it repair files but that didn`t help. So, I uninstalled the game , installed it, and started to update right from build 37625 to 40040. How long should this take? After 3 hours it had patched about 10%.

That seems a bit long for it to only be 10% - you will need to check also that directx 9 (needs to be directx 9 due to the way Directx versions work - DirectX 9 and DirectX 10/11 will run quite happily side by side) and .NET Framework 2.0 are installed (normally a)sks you to install these during the installation of Trainz - if it doesn't, the setup files will be on the DVD (dxsetup for DirectX, dotnetfx for .NET Framework)
Also, make sure that the antivirus was not enabled during the installation, the patch should then work.
What operating system are you running? If it is Windows Vista or Windows 7, the patch will need to be installed in administrator mode.

I have vista. Now when I try to launch trainz it says Launcher.exe- bad image. C:\program files\auran\ts2009\bin\kernalresource_7c.dll is not designed to run on windows or contains an error. I`ll have to try to get directx 9 and turn off my anti virus and try again. Is there another good source for it other than the microsort website, I was on it checking for directx 10 and it seems all they want is to push directx 11, hard to find other versions. Whenever I install the game and it does the software check it passes for directx 9 or better? Are those setup files on the trainz dvd? I`ve never had it ask me to install anything before.

In relation to the 'Bad Image' error, this sounds like something hasn't copied over correctly - make sure the A/V software (antivirus) is turned off during the main installation of Trainz itself.
The kernalstandard related error is usually related to the vista permissions problem - running Trainz as administrator should cure this problem (also make sure SP1 is installed if it isn't already part of it - you can check by going into Trainz Options, then the Advanced Tab, then there should be 2 'new' options at the bottom (compared to TRS2006 pre SP1) - Supress Asset Warnings in Trainz and Autosave in Surveyor)

Do I have to have my antivirus off to install the service packs as well? How do I run as administrator? I`ve heard of that for a computer but not for a game.
For Vista and Win7, I believe if you right-click a program file (or shortcut) there should be an option labeled "Run as Administrator" that runs the program with admin rights, which is usually how programs ran under XP.

Yes, that is one of the ways of doing it - to set it on a permanent basis (at least until the process is reversed):
1. Right-click the shortcut in question.
2. Choose Properties.
3. If it is available, click Compatibility, then Run as Administrator (this will be a tick box), then OK. (you can skip the remaining steps)
4. If the compatibility tab is not available, there should be an advanced... button - click this then tick the run as administrator box, then click OK twice.

I uninstalled trainz, turned off my anti virus and firewall, installed trainz, turned on my a\v and firewall, downloaded sp1, and now when I try to run trainz it says C:\program files\auran\ts2009\trainz.exe is not a valid Win32 application. I`m seriously getting ticked off, I`m feeling that I paid $50 for a game that won`t work properly!!! I`ve re installed it 4 times in the last week.

SP1 should be installed straight after installation, then SP2/SP3 can be installed once the Planet Auran details/CD Key are entered.
The error given sounds like an issue with the SP1 update - possibly a bad download of SP1?
If the error happened before the SP1 update, it may be a problem with the DVD disc that Trainz is being installed from.

I tried the game after I installed it and ran as administrator like you said and it worked fine. It was only after I installed sp1 to go to build 38599 that it screwed up. Other than that the only difference I noticed was that when I went to install sp1 I didn`t have to type in the location it was already there. I`ve noticed links to more than one sp1 with different build numbers. Is there one that`s better to get than the rest?

Just out of interest, what edition of Trainz are you using? If it is the one directly from Auran, the SP1 patch goes up to 38017 (info from ts2009.com) not 38599 - if it is a version that is published by another company, check their website for the patch.
