Serious consideration here

Hello everyone,

I've been debating a serious decision in the past couple of days related to Model RRing.

I've been walking the line of selling all of my HO gauge equipment, and moving up to O gauge.

I want to start off in Lionel Legacy so I don't have to worry about upgrading later. (The starter sets aren't cheap - but with lionel, what is?)

Based on the research, I would make approximately $1,954 off of my Ho scale stuff.

Of course, that is assuming my devaluing estimates are accurate, and that I actually sell everything.

Now, I just have some things I want to clarify. Random facts that I have yet to find.

-Is there any advice from anybody who has made the switch before? Such as things to look out for?
-What are some good ways to spark interest in the things I'm selling?
-I have a BLI Blueline UP BigBoy in near-pristine condition. How much could I get off of that? I haven't seen any on ebay recently.

Of course, any help is appreciated. Thanks.

General rule of thumb is you'll get around 75% of what you paid for an item just by opening the box. From there if it's been removed from the box, operated and such the price drops etc.

Ebay, being an auction site, changes those rules somewhat. Plus you have some control of how much you want to get out of it.

Honestly, whatever money you think you'll get, expect to see 1/2 - 3/4 of that. Hobby items are not selling as well right now because of the current US economic situation. Ebay is still you're best bet at getting the best dollar, as well as putting it on model railroad sites that may allow commerce.

Heh if I could afford it I'd love to pick up a Big Boy, but oh well. Best of luck selling things.

P.S. Don't list in Michigan lol we're completely broke up here and can't afford much for hobbys :'(

I really want to get the Bigboy from the hobby shop here.

Oh yes, just got back from a train show yesterday. I happened to end up selling next to a guy (as a seller myself), and he made the switch from HO to O so this is right up your alley.

Like I said before, expect to take some money loss, you'll never get near back what you've spent, don't expect to either or you'll probably not sell anything at all. As far as items, sell, discount, combine, sell cheap, some money is probably better than no money.

If you sell on ebay be EXTREMELY careful in how you wrap the item, people don't pay for items only to receive them broken.

Best of luck

Thanks for the advice guys. I still haven't made the final decision yet, but I'm beginning to think it's best to just wait for now.

Have you considered On30? Not sure what prototypes you are interested in but there is a lot of interesting stuff in On30. I switched from HO and will likely never go back.

As it was stated Ebay is your best bet just be sure to read all the info on pricing etc and besure not to loose on shiping. my dad and i have N O HO loads of stuff for all 3 but currently just our o scale is set up we mite put an N scale in our bar room..

Check out MTH also they make some great stuff good prices never have had one problem and if we did The shop we go at takes care of it right away, Try to find a shop that gives ya a break too. theres loads of deals on O scale on Ebay right now i have come close to buying a few things.
Good Luck...
