Screen grab

I know it's silly question but everytime i do a screen grab on trainz the picture comes out black Help............

I get a black image if I paste it into MS Paint - but only when Trainz is set to OpenGL.

When set to DirectX - I get no problems at all.

Well, You should look in your screenshots folder instead.

You can, if you can find it. With some Vista installations it's in Virtual Store which can make life difficult.

In addition, the Trainz screenshots folder stores the images as .tga files which won't load into MS Paint.

You therefore need to use another application which can read .tga files. I use Gimp2, which is great for gmax image processing etc.
However, it is unnecessarily complex to use if all you want to do is grab screenshots and save them as .jpg files and maybe change the sizing for forum posting. I prefer the simplicity of MS Paint to do that.

I do have to remember to delete my Trainz .tga files at regular intervals though. I've simply created a desktop shortcut to the Trainz screenshot folder to make life easier than having to remember where they are stored and groping my way through two file pathways.

I hate Vista!

If you run Trainz as an administrator, then you do not have to worry about all of that stuff. Trainz will write to the correct ScreenShots folder, no VirtualStore, no hair-pulling. It is just like good old Windows XP. ;)

Be grateful that Microsoft even put the Run as administrator function in Windows Vista. Otherwise, we would all be in the same mess!

I agree that the huge, multi-megabyte screenshots can take up a huge amount of space. Now trout-whack me for hoarding my screenshots (i. e. not cleaning out the ScreenShots folder)! :o  ;)

Regards.

Well, that is only really needed for 04 (and presume 06/TC as well) - later versions of Trainz such as 2010 (and I presume 09 too) already save screenshots as .jpg, rather than .tga, so you don;'t have to worry about compressing them to save disk space.

As for manipulating them, you could simply download Irfanview which is a free image viewer useful for viewing multiple image file types, including tga and jpg (it can also view other, non-graphic file types by installing plugins, such as Acrobat pdf documents and text files.) - it can also manipulate images and bulk convert them from one file type to another, so it's well worth looking into. :)
