Scary start to the day

Hi there, Bob; I think I'll take her in to the closest Future Shop. They put in the GTX260 and a bigger power supply that I just remembered about. It does look easy, but if anyone can screw things up, I'm your man! She might be gone for a few days or more, maybe that's a good thing. I have been spending way too much time building the route.

Thanks for everything, I'm diconnecting everything in a few minutes, see ya soon, cheers...Rick

I think that is a good choice. I have changed a few hard drives, but there is always a glitch that is possible, and letting someone that does it for a living handle it, can certainly lower your stress level.

Thanks guys, she's in the shop, and I have a feeling of relief. Geez, I've been putting in 8 hour days building the route, even more most days. I feel like I'm on vacation! I just want you all to know I am really very grateful to the bunch of ya.

Cheers....Rick

Afternoon Gents; I'm bored to death, enough vacation, already! Murphy's Law is working great for me, the only thing in life that I can count on working. Well, I have about another week (that's not including more of Murph's stinking law) before I get my machine back from the shop. I was hoping to get it back today, before the big storm. Of course if i did get it back, I'm sure that Mr. Murphy would see to it that my power would be knocked out for at least a week or two. So, now, I suspect the storm will pass with no problems, or miss us entirely.

First the guy at the shop informs me that I have 2 failing HDs. 1 TB each. Well all that is news to me, I had not even heard of a TB, until I had my rig for a couple of years. I guess there could be 2 HDs in there. Anyway, they tried to put in a Western Digital unit, but there is some kind of problem with some HP models and these HDs. Well, of course there is! Now they are ordering the new HDs from HP. Now, what do you think the chances are that they can no longer get them? Pretty darn good, I'm thinking!

Well, since I don't have Trainz to play with, I've been spending more time with the wife. We are now suffering from numerous injuries. If the power does go out for days, we may booth end up in wheel chairs. I've been 62 for a couple of days now. I guess I'll have to start doing "warm up" exercises before any activities.

Well, my southern brothers, you guys in the Northeast, be ready for the storm. We had a 40 incher a few years back. 3 feet of snow can really bog things down for awhile. I had to jump out a window, praying it was not over my head, dig my way to the closest door, and let out my dogs and cats, and fill up the bird feeders. You may be stuck in the house for days. Don't forget, warm up before any strenuous activities!

Cheers.....Rick

My advice in this situation is , whatever ever your wife says, you say...." I agree"... And everything will be fine... ;)

Oh, I'm agreeing, must have gotten a little rusty. I have been getting some mighty fine meals the last couple of days! Boy, I forget just about everything, when I start working on the darn route!

How much more can a man take? I just learned that the shop was sending an email today, asking, "Where are the hard drives?" This shop may remember the old Rick, the one with lots of money to waste. The last time I was told I would have to wait for some time, I bought a new pc (the one in the shop now) and when they fixed the other one, I would give it to the wife. I'm starting to think that they are waiting for me to come in begging for them to sell me the best pc in the house. Oh, I have been drooling over some nice looking rigs! One is a nice looking $2500 gamer, the other, a S1400 gamer want-a-be. I'm trying to control myself, and keep saying, "Your rig is fine, runs trainz great, don't be a fool." Meanwhile... "the second honeymoon" continues. Will this nightmare ever end?

Cheers.....(I needs a shot of Trainz, real bad) Rick

Hi Rick,

Quitting Trainz cold can be fatal. Didn't read the extra fine print on the bottom of the box or in the hidden pixel on the website? It says that stopping Trainz without titrating down is unhealthy and can lead to mental breakdown, neuroleptic malignant seizures, tremors, cold feet, sweating, cravings for model trains, trains, railroad history, super new computers, and... the list goes on. :)

We had a big storm last weekend with about 24-35 inches across the south. There's another 1-3 inches scheduled for this weekend. My brother has a snow blower and shovels; I'm lucky I'm not allowed outside due to falling issues. There's some good things out of this, I suppose. :) You mentioned digging out like you did for the bird feeders, cats and dogs. Back in the blizzard of 1978, we had snow banks so high, our not-so-little schnauzer looked like a spec of sand next to the snow bank! We even had to shovel off our roof back then.

You'll be fine. Hang in there! :)

Morning John; Dang, I remember good old mom begging me to stay away from the train yard. "Those trains are gonna kill ya." As usual, I fear, she knew what she was talking about.

I have stumbled upon a few CNR sites, I never saw before. At least that helps a bit. I used to get up at 3 or 4 AM, put on the coffee, head for the computer room, and start banging away at the route. Sometimes, until 7 PM. Maybe this HD problem was a good thing.

Just got out of a cold snap. I was working on this dead tree that washed up on our land. Man, the lake/salt marsh looks like a scene from the far north, broken ice sticking up at all angles. The wife was help up by a dozen or so deer crossing the road. Sure signs that spring is on the way. Soon...I hope.

Cheers...Rick

I spent the last month getting a new computer up and running, after a motherboard meltdown on my old one. Although I had backed up a lot, going to a new (Windows 8) operating system caused me to lose the capability to access some much older programs and files (genealogy files specifically). Even after having my old hard drive from the shot computer, installed as a 3rd drive in the new computer, and trying to access the files from there- was a bust as Windows 8 and my old genealogy program couldn't dance together. So, bottom line.... your suggestion of a cloned drive sounds like the 'golden' ticket for me. I'm looking right now at the Macrium reflect site you reference....Do you have a recommendation for which version to get? I see Free, (which is always nice but usually not quite adequate for most programs), Standard, Pro and Server. Which do you recommend? Rebecca

I have the standard version it is wonderful. Once you set it, it takes care of itself and you always have a backup ready to load onto a new hard drive, if the worst happens and your drive fails. In addition, it backs up all your files, so if a file is corrupted for some reason, it takes a few seconds to restore it from you save files. Money well spent, and the program is updated automatically and they have a great support forum too. http://www.macrium.com/default.aspx

Thanks Bob, I'm a learnin....... Now I have 2 programs to review and choose. Rebecca

If you want to compare apples to apples you have to compare the Macrium Standard to The Paragon Harddisk Suite which is $49.95, to get comparable features. Looks like the support on for the Paragon Payware is only 30 days versus lifetime on the Macrium, and I don't see a user forum mentioned for the paragon product. Looks like Paragon sells their support after the 30 days, even with their $49 version. Don't care for that approach at all. I had a couple of question when I got Macrium, and posting on their forum got me an answer withing hours. http://support.macrium.com/

I've been using paragons stuff since the year dot including its payware partition manager, unrestricted means it doesn't time out after 30 days or pester you with Nag screens, nothing more, many so called free programs are not actually anything other than trials. I was just suggesting an alternative known to work freeware solution from a company with a good pedigree in utilities.

Thanks for the replies from both Bob & Malc. After spending the afternoon reading all I could, about both back-up/clone programs, they do seem fairly equal at the payware 'Standard' level. (Both are just shy of $50.00). Paragon instruction seems to be written well, including someone like me- with my more limited computer savy and also has a very good knowledge base to read & use. But, I, like Bob, seem to respond best to the forum type support system (hence where I am at this moment....) So I am going to try Macrium. Thanks to both of you again, it was so good, to actually have two recommended programs. Rebecca

That break away can be good. Since I've been placed on disability, I've been Trainzing for hours at a time. Getting up at 10:00, taking medication, then using Trainz until 3:00 AM! I got some good stuff done, tweak some trolley wires, and have been doing some driving, but I DO need to step away and I know it. I tried practicing the piano a bit again. I have my good days and bad days with this now which is frustrating, so after 15 minutes of wanting to make firewood out of the piano, I'm back to using Trainz again.

The big herd of deer must've been heading to my house. We put out cracked corn for the wildlife. Yesterday we had about 80 mallard ducks and 40 wild turkeys having lunch. At night we get about 5 or 6 deer that come to feed at the feeders. I agree it must be spring coming. :)

Morning Gents;

Well, today's the big day....I hope. I got a call last night from the shop. They said they got everything copied from the old hard drives except for one thing. Yup....TS12. For "some reason" TS12 will not go on the new hard drive. They want me to bring in the TS12 discs and see if that helps. I have a feeling that this will end up in a re install. I believe that I have backed up every file in the trainz folder. I don't care if I have to copy all the backed up material, I'm just getting a little nervous that for some reason I will have to start the whole route over from day one. I am not looking forward to that.

I have to head out to the shop in an hour or so. Any ideas about why they could not copy the TS12 install onto the new HD?

Well, wish me luck, I'll check back here before I leave in case someone has some info on this snafu.

Cheers, thanks for everything........Rick
