Saving route hangs

Why does Trainz hang sometimes when I save a large route? It says precaching content and the squares keep flashing. I have to force quit Trainz in task manager and sometimes it runs a DBR when I load Trainz again which takes a while.

At the risk of being accused of "pushing the company line" I would suggest that a possible cause may be lack of space on your selected storage device. Others may insist that it is bad programming on N3V's part.

How much space is on your User Data Drive? Content Manager will give you an idea of how much space in the Trainz database your route will occupy so as a rule of thumb I would double that to see how much free space is needed to add the route to the database - but this will depend on the extent of the changes that have been made.

My current project route in CM is 206MB in size. If I make a change and save then Trainz will (I am assuming) follow the practice of other software and save the entire route as a new asset in the database which will need about 206MB of free space. The original route will remain in the database until the new route has been successfully saved at which point the original will be deleted from the database and the update will take its place.

I'm going to try to free some more space on the C drive before trying to save the route again because I hate these DBR's that happen when Trainz crashes or hangs. I can't go back into Trainz while the DBR is taking place, and it takes maybe an hour or so. The DBR gets stuck at a certain point in scanning for added asset files but eventually resumes and finishes.

If this is a regular hard disk, you also need to defragment the drive. Once you clear space, defrag the drive but keep in mind that this process will take quite a long time, with quite being and underestimate, for the process to complete.

I'm currently using older hard drives because I'm not in the financial position to upgrade right now since our National Grid gas and electric bills are through the roof and my brother and I have had to pick up the extra expenses.

Can I suggest

Prior to editing a route or even merging routes. Using the minimap Ctrl + M and navigate around the entire route, making sure all baseboards are loaded will help precaching on a larger route. I do this prior to merging larger routes or creating a session for larger routes and it hasn't yet let me down

Try that and see how you go (y)

I do the same after I discovered this ages ago while inspecting my route for a merging location. I noticed that the merge process was quicker and smoother.
