The 400-class Beyer-Garratt locomotives were built in France for the South Australian Railways to work the narrow 3' 6" gauge ore trains from the Broken Hill mines to Port Pirie.

The first of the ten locomotives was delivered in mid-1953. All were withdrawn by 1969.

One unusual feature of the design of the locomotives was the ability to convert them to 5' 3" broad gauge should the need arise.
__________

It was a good idea to use 120ft turntables, otherwise the locomotives would not be able to access the refueling facilities:

Many thanks to Bill for the locomotive and all the other talented rolling stock modelers.

Most impressive young Grasshopper!

I did not realise VR sold JX wagons to SAR... :hehe:

No doubt we can expect some 406 sessions soon?

Cheers
