Running Trainz

If you have the version from 'Just Trains', there is no way to run without the disc in the drive.
I have that version & my disc lives in the cd drive, I never take it out, does no harm as I use my DVD drive if I need to load another disc.

Leave it in the drive

Because putting it in the case and back out will cause the disc to crack at some stage. It did with me.

That's why I don't
put it in the case and back out
, as I said, I leave mine in the CD drive permanent. (it's been there for 3 years.)
If I need to put another disc in my machine, I use the DVD drive.

Chances are any disk imaging software would do the job[1], I doubt Auran has bothered with any of the hugely expensive middleware items like SafeDisc, and you DO have a legal right[1] to create such an image to prevent wear and tear on the disc you bought.

I can't say for sure though, because I only own 2010 and it doesn't need a disc in the drive (well, the download version anyway, I can't speak for the dvd version, but I'd wager it's the same).

[1] In most of the world it's an absolute legal right, in the US it falls under fair use doctrine except where the DMCA supercedes things, if Auran haven't included any DRM then the DMCA exceptions to fair use do not apply.

Actually - I've tried to create a 'virtual version' of a TRS2004 disc, but something on the disc caused it to return a filesize of 2.00MB and not function correctly - I believe that on some TRS2004 discs (and later versions) have some form of copy protection on them that basically mucks up the ISO creation (or IMG creation) process to the point of making the resulting file useless. (Some versions (the Just Trains versions) do use Safedisc for disc validation)

Some versions of Trainz don't need the CD/DVD - the ones that are like that do not have copy-protection on the disc (and it usually copies everything across that is required to run the game)
