Reskinning Help Sought

I have never reskinned anything at all in Trainz, and I've been using it since UTC was first released. I figure I might as well start.

The first project I would like to do is simple. I would like to take an existing scheme and "dumb it down." I have a unit painted for a particular Class 1 railroad, and I would like to cover the logos and reporting marks, essentially patching it to be a leaser unit.

How would I maintain the details when covering over the logos? For instance, keeping the grille visible, keeping the engine doors there, etc. Keep in mind, I've never re-skinned anything, and my knowledge of how to do so is null. I am running TRS 2006 and using GIMP.

Thanks.

Another good reference to texturing in general is in the tutorial section from Paul Hobbs site. Have a look at the reference - makes a good read and will point the way should you ever want to branch to creation in GMax, 3dsMax or preferably Blender.

What is the kuid of the item you want to reskin? The reason I ask is that some items are easier to reskin than others. Some are impossible. Also does the license permit you to reskin?

The other consideration is GIMP, yes its possible to reskin in GIMP and I use it myself but it tends to add in an alpha channel when you edit which normally has to be removed. Paint.net might be a better choice of the first one. Paintshop pro X1 makes life easier. X2 needs dual core, ebay has it on offer, X2 upgrade costs $29.99 from corel until june 22nd but you need psp 7 or greater to upgrade from, ebay has a copy for 99 cents.

I successfully completed the reskin I originally posted about. Thank you to all who responded. I am considering taking the advice and geting PSP X2. I have a dual core processor.

Thanks again.
