repairing older assets (two routes).

I received an email from Auran/N3V this morning advising that two of my creations (circa 2004) required repair or they would be offered to the community to do so in 8 weeks time.

So I took the first one - Crawford Hill - into TS2012 and after a couple of hours, much head scratching and swearing, I managed to edit the CFG file sufficiently that TS2012 sees the route as okay and without any warnings. :)

Phew! That was hard work but, lessons learned, I then did the same with Potash.
All good, no warnings. :)

So I fired up TS2012 and saw both routes sitting in the list, opened Crawford in Surveyor and Hey Presto!....there she was!
Looking a bit scruffy and dated but after popping a consist on one end I ran the route for the first time in more than six years.
I'll tidy it up a bit and then upload this new version ("Crawford Hill -TS2012").

Half the job completed.
So I then opened up Potash in Surveyor and ........... huh?

Nothing!
Blue sky and blue expanse everywhere else on and on and on into infinity.
The Find Objects list was empty....nothing listed!

I backed out, went into the CM and opened up the CFG file.
All the strings are there and all the KUIDs are listed.
Checked it again in the editor and no warnings.

Would anyone out there have any idea as to why this has happened???

As a follow-up, I also "repaired" Robe River Iron and exactly the same thing happened - blue sky and blue world yet all assets and strings are listed in the CFG file.

Why is this working for one route but not two others?

I have also had problems opening TRS2004 routes into TS12. I got round the problem by first loading the route into TRS2006, doing a save as which gives a new asset which has a different file structure when viewed in CM - Edit in explorer. The new route then opened successfully in TS12. If you still have access to TRS2006 you might find this gets round the problem. You will probably still need to do some updating.

Hi Bruce,

Nice to see you here again!

In TS12 there are now layers and this maybe your problem. Click on the layers tab (lower right tab), and ensure that there are eyeballs showing and not dimmed out, and perhaps locked. If the eye is lit up then the layer is active. If your route layer is dimmed out, then this maybe your problem. With the layer locked, you cannot edit the layer and this can create another issue for you as well. There are advantages to this locking as you know if you're familiar with paint and CAD programs.

Now while I remember, I want to mention something related to the layers as this issue can drive even a sane man bonkers!

All route-related stuff such as track laying, water, trees, and such has to be done on the route layer. Any train-related stuff such as editing sessions and adding drivers is done in the sessions.

The old default save is a bit of a miss and confusing. The route is overwritten as stated, but a new sessions is created as though that is a save-as. The end result is you'll end up with many, many default sessions, based on the number of saves you've done.
To get around this, I go about the save process a bit differently. Instead of just saving and hitting okay, I choose the option NOT to save the session while I am editing my route. The only time I edit a session is when I am adding trains and drivers. For this I exit to the route menu and go back into the session menu for the route. There I create the session and do my train-related edits. If I find anything that needs fixing on the route side, which you can still see and have access to because you're still in Surveyor, I make note of it and return to the Route editing menu and edit my route through there.

This may seem a bit confusing at first, but you'll hopefully see my logic in this. There's nothing worse then ending up with a list of default sessions and then trying to figure out which one is the most recent.

Hi Bruce,

Nice to see you here again!
Thanks, John. It's been a few years, for sure. :)

I triple-checked the advice you have given regarding the layers and all checks out okay - both eyes are open and the locks are also open for both the route-layer and the session-layer.

I then carefully scrutinised the CFG file, comparing it to that for Crawford Hill, the other route that needed updating and which works perfectly normally.
Apart from information specific to the individual routes the two CFGs are identical in structure.

Yet one opens in Trainz and the other doesn't. Very peculiar and I can't fathom why this is so.
This is most frustrating as I wanted to provide a TS2012 version (as I will be doing with Crawford Hill) but have now reached the head-banging stage!

I also have been folllowing your method for editing/creating in that in the test route (whist awaiting DEM from "Jerker") I edit the route in Surveyor and then save it but exclude saving the session each time.

Regards,
Bruce

No, I only have TS2012 installed but you've made me think that it might be a worthwhile thing to do.

Thanks for the suggestion. :)
