REmoting into PC running Trainz 2012

I was trying to access my PC through my Chromebook to run Trainz like I run all the other programs on my PC, but there was an error message that kept coming up saying the program couldn't communicate with the system. It also mentioned changing DirectX and Open GL settings.

The program works perfectly when I access the Trainz program directly through the PC, but gets hung up when I try to remote in to run it.

Has anyone else had these issues, or come up with a solution?

You cannot remotely run any 3D games or simulations. Remote desktop will not load the drivers for that to work.

Thanks Paul. That makes since. But my living room chair is so much more comfortable, than my office chair! Hope the wife doesn't mind a little furniture rearrangement!

Oh, I don't know if that's entirely true. Actually I do it all the time at work... (I mean from home The trick I've found is to start the game, even getting to the restore session select route etc... stage before remoting. I cant start the game remotely, but I can certainly join it in session. from the remote pc I run from the command prompt { mstsc.exe /console /v:nameofpc } this tells the remote pc to start an RDP session (remote) using console (take ownership of remote pc) to the pc "nameofpc" It works for me...... Your results may vary.

the problem is the screen resolution, make sure that trainz is set to run at the screen size sent to your device. or run it in windowed mode.

I tried running in window mode, and just got a black screen. Got the rest of the desktop fine, but not the game. Wondering if it's a Chromebook thing?

That maybe the problem. I'm not familiar with the Chromebook other then seeing it at Staples last night when I picked up a toner cartridge. The problem maybe that the graphics on the devices are very limited and the fact that they don't use a standard video driver from a company such as ATI or NVidia. They probably don't even have Open/GL available for it either.

the problem is trainz has to run at the res it is set for, if it cant you get the message you reported. you must set it to whatever the remote video is trying to be on your device.

There you go, it is not going to work. Anything not Microsoft will have issues.

The only product I know that can do it is TigerVNC. I've used it at a few clients that have some high end Servers handling simulations and 3D graphics with Thin Client Sessions on Remote Laptops and PCs. There may be another VNC server out there that can handle it but Windows RDP can't.

Yes, that's our finding as well. Typical VNC clients/servers will have no problems as they simply "screenshot" your screen and forward that to you in compressed form, but any remote desktop solutions which requires custom video drivers (such as Microsoft's Remote Desktop) do not generally support provide support for 3D applications.

Running Chrome RDP for access my PC. Running in the Dev channel on a CR-48 Chromebook for anyone who might know what the resolution is. Don't have any issues at all running everything else on my PC from the same Chromebook and program to remote in. I even use the same Chromebook to remote into my work office computer which is 60 miles south of me.

I've no experience with the ChromeOS RDP software but I'd assume that it has the problem we're talking about above. Your only option would be to switch to some RDP software which does not exhibit this limitation. I'd suggest VNC, but I have no idea whether ChromeOS has a VNC client available. Maybe someone else could chime in there.

They're out there. TightVNC also has a Java based VNC Client as well that may work.

CR-48 appear to have 1280 x 800 screens. the remote session is probably setting the desktop to that res, which is what trainz will have to be set to in order to function on that desktop.

Tried changing Chromebook res, which can be changed to 1440 x 900 with no luck, but I will see if I can match it up closer by reducing res at the game/PC level. I also have the Chrome OS team at Google looking into this, so if they come up with something, I'll make sure to post it here for others.

Just matched up everything from the PC res, to the game display settings to match the ability of the res on the Chromebook. (1240 x 800) Still game would not start. So I started a session, and it came up with nothing but a black screen.

I've found that Splashtop (www.splashtop.com) works really well. It is the best I've found at keeping up with games ... you might want to give it a try. Download the streamer for the host, and an App for the Client-side (apps are available for Android Devices, Apple Devices, Windows, etc.)

Good news folks. Found out that the conflict was within the Chrome RDP App. Setup and used another app for the Chromebook called "Chrome Remote Desktop" and it works like a charme. Now I can sit back, relax, grab a cold one, and learn the wonderful program from the comfort of my nice living room chair. Thanks for everyones input.
