Regarding V&T Moguls

hoborailcat

Backdating is fun.
While I only have TRS2004, and the moguls are for TS2009 and up, I would like to have a go at backdating and converting them for TRS2004. The only problem with this is that the only way that they can be downloaded (as far as I know) is through the DLS Download Helper. Since I don't have a TS2009 to register, there is no way for me to get them. Just wondering, is there any other legal way to download them other than the DLS?

Of course! Shoot me a PM with your email address, and I'll send you some cdps. Let me know if you have any preferences as to which one; otherwise I'll pick a random one.
You will need the mesh files as well. If you haven't found them already, they're at http://carsoncarshops.com/downloads_vtrr_rolling_stock.htm

It's been a while since I did these, but you'll likely need to:
Replace one of the reflective GMAX materials - it only works in TS2009 SP1 or later
re-adjust the driver mesh to center it at 0/0/0 on the mesh, and add another invisible bogey (since the tags for keeping the bogey from turning don't work in older versions)
The animated bell script won't work in anything before TRS2006
Some of the smoke tags (and the operational cylinder drains) don't work before TC3.
Use (or create) a new enginespec
The pilot bogey may need some work to keep it on the track on curves - you may have to make the entire body part of the driver mesh like Ben did with his 4-4-0's.

Good luck!!
Curtis

While re-doing the bogey part of the config, I've come across the following: bogeys {
0 {
bogey <kuid2:124060:50017:1>
reversed 0
rotation-permitted 0
}
1 {
bogey <kuid:-10:149>
reversed 0
}
2 {
bogey <kuid2:124060:50041:1>
reversed 0
sideplay-permitted 1
}
}
After converting this to the old bogey format, where would I incorporate, the rotation-permitted and sideplay-permitted lines? Thanks in advance for any help.

Just about got them to work. The tenders are working just fine but the engines don't appear and Trainz Objectz reports that it cannot find:
C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2004\World\Dispatcher\Downloads\kuid2 124060 1018\mogul_body\mogul_body.lm.im
I feel like I'm being quite annoying right now with all these problems, but I'm just not sure how to fix this one.

No worries - is there any chance you can post the mesh table in your config file?

edit - have you also re-exported the mesh using valid TRS2004 materials?

Curtis

I believe that the mesh problem has been solved, as that error no longer appears. I am now getting an error that states:
Required texture 'mogul_body\semitransparent' appears to be missing.

Could the problem in the post above have to do with the difference between Trainz versions or is it just that something wasn't downloaded? I'm stumped.

I've never seen that error before, and there's no texture named that in the model. Did you re-export the body mesh from GMAX after replacing the unsupported material?

Curtis

I haven't done anything with Gmax before. I tried downloading it once and my computer wouldn't run it. It always froze when starting. The tender is working fine, it seems like every other thing that can be done with the engine has been done.

I've kept trying Gmax, but I can't for the life of me get it to even open on this old piece of crap computer. I'm not sure where to turn now.:confused:

I may have found something dealing with the mogul_body\semitransparent texture. In the virginia.texture file in the mogul_body, I found a line that reads "AlphaHint=semitransparent". If I delete this line or change it to something else, could that possible solve the problem?

From the wiki:
AlphaHint
Specify how the alpha channel is used. Affects final alpha quality. May also affect texture compression and mip generation.
  • opaque - (default with no alpha present) No alpha channel used.
  • semitransparent - (default with alpha present) Alpha blended
  • masked - Alpha masked

By deleting that line the missing texture no longer seems to be a problem. However, now the locomotive is technically working, but invisible. You can hear the whistle and bell and the engine takes up space in surveyor, but you can't see it. If it would help, here's the config file:
