The basics are more than enough to have fun. I'd definitely recommend starting with Scratchy's Coal Country or the P&B routes, they've got a nice balance of scenery and things to do without being overwhelming. And don't forget you can always run some freight trains on the British routes too, I'm sure they'd love to haul some coal overseas!
