Recommended Layouts/Routes

Can anyone recommend layouts/routes for TRS2006 that either use all default kuids or comes with them.

I understand the download process and have a couple of add on routes but I always seem to end up with kuids (assets?) missing that are not available from the download station and I am at a loss where to find the,

I think Trainz is a wonderful sim but I find the kuid thing a bit frustrating.

Finding routes with all built-in or DLS items is really tough. I've found with the routes that I've downloaded that I can find a lot of the missing assets at TrainzProRoutes. I've never understood why some creators will put their content on 3rd party sites and not on the DLs, but that's their decision. What I'll ususally do if the asset isn't on the DLS is to do a google search. I can usually find them that way. If I still can't find them, I'll do a search on the forums here and then I can usually find a post or thread somewhere that tells me what the missing kuid is and where I can probably find it.

I think it would be nice if during Auran's automatic checks after someone uploads a route, that the checks would check to see if all items are either built-in or on the DLS. If they are, there could be some sort of notation about it. There might be an easier way, but right now, I don't know of one.

I've only built routes in TRS2004, so I can't speak to later versions, but there's no easy way that I know of after building a route to go back and check to see if the hundreds of items in the route are built-in items, DLS items or 3rd party content.

The way I understand it, uploading an item on the DLS is equivalent to signing the copyright of it to Auran. I may be wrong as I haven't read the rules behind it, but I definitely understand where people are coming from in that regard.
 
That's it Robbie, and a good enough reason for creators to NOT upload to the DLS. Down the road you find your content distributed changed or part of something you want no part of. It's sad, but if a creator wants to maintain any kind of control over his or her work, then the DLS is not an option.
 
You can Google the Kuid, locate it, and download and commit it...or you can run the route with the content missing...or you can delete all missing content. Don't sweat the small stuff. It's just a game !

Missing content never really bothered me that much, unless it was missing Track.
The Greenery Track, Textures & Trees is usually what is missing, as it is higher quality than the Auran default DLS carp. (a big fish)

I've read the agreement on uploading items to the DLS and as I understand, it doesn't give Auran a copyright to the creators original works. It only gives them a license to use the work and make it available (for free or pay) as they see fit. It does not give them the right to modify your original work either. The original creator still maintains the copyright to the original work.

Yeah Mike, I understand what it says, and you are correct as far as that goes, but explain that to the guys who gave the okay for their routes to be included in 2010, then got "SpeedTree-ed"!

I agree with you on that. The license, as far as I read it, didn't give Auran that right if I understand your comment correctly. I haven't bought 2010 yet, so I can only guess what's happened from the comments on the forum.

I see that you are UK based.

If you are interested in other than Euro-centric routes, search the Download Station with "philskene" as the author. All the dependencies needed by the routes are either built-in or on the DLS.

You will also find that the routes use a basic tool kit of downloads, so once you have one you have most of the dependencies for the others.

You will find session too, eg:

My layouts on the DLS are intended to be "built in" content only. Some inadvertantly have some non built in content but nothing that would be missed. The only 06 is my Niles, Hinton & Winchester 06 but those for earlier versions will work fine.

:cool: I know about a persons intentions being mashed into the ground & agree that could hurt an ego far beyond the scope of "normal" well-being...

I download routes all the time & whether they are prototype or fantasy their are usually some things I can absolutely not live with...

So I make a "modified" version of the downloaded route & title it as such.

I remove unneeded spline points, add points where they are obviously missing...just remove all the anomalies that could possibly drive me crazy.

No route is ever completely finished, everyone who has ever built a model railroad habitat knows what I am talking about.

It's hard to justify being "blind-sided" by additions to a route, however I just can't believe something would be done that would actually "destroy" the intent of one of our Content Creators. After all, features are added that would stand out missing if excluded in a route added to a group of new routes featured in a new release of the game.

If three out of one-hundred users noticed a change & disagreed I'd be surprised, as I would if more than 3% noticed a signal out of place or an impossible curve on a mainline grade.

But that everything has to be uploaded to the DLS, is not accurate because many assets that are displayed have live links to websites where the content is actually located.
 
I have downloaded layouts that use much non built in stuff, without that stuff, then refinished it with only built in stuff, even track.
Except for rolling stock including locos, I don't download non buit in stuff, as a strict rule.

For sure, although living in the UK I was an NMRA British Region member for years in N Gauge - the US routes are just awesome. I like the short lines but cant deny the 4x6 GP/SD lash ups

With TS2010 (and possibly 2009/2006) you can use Content Manager to view all the dependencies for a route you made. You then click View in Main List and it'll list all the dependencies in the main area. Then you can apply filters to the list. (Say built-in true/false)

With TS2010 at least, any files that get added via .cdp files instead of DLS show up as "locally modified" so files that are not built-in and not locally modified would be DLS items. Locally modified items could be fixed items, items downloaded off DLS via FTP, or non-DLS items. Taking a look at the config file can help identify where the object comes from. For example a couple of my routes use Prellbock (Railsend) from VMD to mark the ends of the tracks. That's the only object not built-in and not on the DLS that the route uses yet.

You can do some really fancy sorting stuff using multiple filters in CMP. However large routes with hundreds and hundreds of dependencies may cause CMP to lag a lot while adding filters.

If I ever release a route on the DLS or otherwise, I think I'll put any off-site dependency info in the config file and probably a readme.txt file. As well as mention it in the description.

There is also another way to tell if a route/session/whatever requires stuff not on the DLS. Have someone with a clean install of Trainz test it out for you. (Or install a second copy for that express purpose.)

Wandering dangerously off-topic, but it is not all that hard in TRS04.

Move your world\dispatcher\downloads folder to the desktop and kill the Dispatcher chump file. Create a new (empty) world\dispatcher\downloads folder.

Run TrainzObjectz so it recognizes the new (empty) folder and updates accordingly.

Start TRS04, load the route and let the Black Screen download DLS dependencies.

Run TO again, load the Map in TO and it will list Built-In content, Third Party content (which at this stage MUST be DLS content) and Missing Content, which will be the stuff from 3rd party sites.

The only assumption above is that you control and recognise the contents of your 'World\Custom' folder.

After getting the map content sorted move the original Dispatcher folder back where it belongs and kill the chump file again. TRS04 Route content sorted in a couple of hours...
