Re-skinning rolling-stock with GIMP 2.6 HELP

My apologies if this is in the wrong place. (my first post ever)

Help.



I am currently trying (for about a year) to re-skin an AN 830 using GIMP, but it doesn't open Texture files.
Error message reads opening Opening 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Auran\TS2009\editing\edit 3knklsoi71\
dl531_an_body\830_an_main.texture' failed:Unknown file type

I've looked at a dozen or so tutorials on how to fix this problem but to no avail.
I'm using windows 7 and TRS2009, is there a way I can open texture files with GIMP, or Paint, or any program that allows editing.
This is annoying because i am normally pretty good with this sort of stuff.
If anyone can help it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Welcome to the forums.

You need to use a tool created by PEV - Images2TGA, to be exact.

This is available at http://members.optusnet.com.au/~villaump/pevsoft.htm, and a tutorial on how to use it is further down that page.
