We had a hound dog that was so ugly, that we shaved him, and trained him to walk backwards.

Rare and quite interesting as the prototype is ... Im sorry ... it should be 2nd runner up, in the "Ugly Trains" thread.

I like the loco alot ... but something about it just say's: "WOOF" !

No argument at all Cas. Its seriously ugly. But that's what makes it cooler than yet another cookie-cutter Emd or GE.

Actually, to make things more interesting, these were really RSD-1s which became RS-1s through truck swaps.

The prototype rebuilds were even more homely:

I like the rebuild. This surely is ugly, almost like they were coming up with cheap plastic models that kind of sort of look like a diesel locomotive.

I've considered it due to my RS1, but since not a lot externally made it through the rebuild, haven't quite been convinced yet.
 
I've read in a book (can't remember its name) that these are ex-US Army RS units. They were shrouded to protect them from the harsh, Alaskan winter (Which if VERY harsh considering it just passed through.)
