Therefore the threat of flooding I judge to be greater than the threat of remote computer interrogation fraud. Even if that flooding threat was not their I would still use the document storage along with steam and all other processes I am using now simply for convenience and business efficiency.

If you wish to have an example of the problems of storing everything on computers in offices and homes, well my brothers business received a letter from a company which had its offices in the twin towers when the New York attack occurred. The letter he received some months later asked how much his company owed the company based in the towers as all the account details had been lost.

Being in workplace health and safety one thing you realize is that everything we do in life is a risk. All you can do is assess that risk and take the lowest hazard option.
Bill,

It is normal industry "practice", in cases like this, to have what is called a disaster recovery plan (DRP). In addition to computers and backups, you should plan on sending other important papers, such as tax and legal documents, and data to an offsite warehouse somewhere. What you don't want is to keep these papers in a safe on the premises, and sure the online storage is great until you can get to your data. Remember the lightning strike that hit Microsoft and Amazon a couple of months ago? This put both of them off the air for quite some time.

Being a small business owner doesn't mean foregoing a DRP. In fact it's most often the "little guys" like you and me who suffer the most when the important information is gone.

It's a small price to pay should anything get washed away in a flood, or destroyed in a fire. With your important information tucked away, elsewhere along with your other written information, offsite, you can easily get up and running quickly once the disaster site has been cleared or cleaned up.

Coming from the paranoid IT guy,

John

Hi Rob And everybody.

...Actually, I came up to the office this morning to run a speech upgrade on my Dragon software. When I finished I decided to give it a bit of a run by dictating my above posting on the forum.

It seemed to run very well, didn't it:D took me about 5 minutes to dictate all that. I was very pleased, I don't know if all rest of the forum is:hehe:

Bill

I'm glad that you have imparted that very important information to us all.

The forum will be really impressed with importance of the important business you're in.

Rob.

Hi everybody.

Rob.

Rob, my last posting which you quote from was an attempt at humor which obviously you did not appreciate. In my previous posting to that if read thoroughly, I do not believe I discussed my business or the business I work in with the exception of the last sentence.

What was discussed and what over 360 postings on this thread have generally been about is steam and its use in Railworks, cloud technology and remote servers along with the risks in their use or not dependent on how individual forum members view it.

I am sorry you do not appreciate the dialogue and my contributions to it but as stated 360 members have contributed to the thread with over 16,000 readers of those postings. My last but one posting which you seem to object the most to has brought forward several members with positive/thoughtful responses other than your own.

I will judge it by that
Bill

Ladies, I've said it before and I'll say it again, handbags DOWN! Before the scones get squashed and tea gets spilt.

@wholbr

Bill,

In many of your posts that I have bothered to read/ploughed through (take a good deep breath), you most always seem to eventually come up with a long winded diatribe on some aspect/incident of the business you're in i.e. H&S. I don't object to that in the least.

All the H&S type people I have come across through work seem to love to expound the importance of the field and, rightly so, important it is.

More so seemingly, they like to play up their own self importance within the H&S field, which can be somewhat tiresome.

Sorry, but you come across as typical of the genre.

Rob.

P.S. Sorry, PC pfx

This is what makes these posts very interesting. We can learn a lot about other people and their careers. I surely have and in particular from Bill.

John

@wholbr

I do apologize for the recent comments I've made. I have deleted my last post regarding this but I see it has been quoted so you can read it if you wish. No excuses, it is very OTT, Sorry.

@pfx. Sorry to you also. You're quite right to step in and try to calm the waters.

Rob.

Hi Robd, pfx, John And Everybody.
First of all can I apologize to everyone for the delay in replying to the postings on the thread which have made reference to me. It was in no way intended as a slight against anyone who may have been thinking I did not wish to make myself available. It was purely that after my initial posting yesterday morning I was then involved in other things which included being rather busy today until I looked in to the forum a few minutes ago.

Also Rob there is certainly no need to apologize for anything you may have stated in the heat of the moment on this thread. Everybody says and does things at times which on reflection you wish you had not done. There is no one worst than me in doing things like the above and anyone who knows me personally will certainly testify to that. So like the true gentleman I know we both are let's just forget it.

John Citron and Geophil thank you for the advice on business disaster recovery and document backup and the location. It genuinely did get me and the wife thinking about it. She has done a quick survey of the office today and has come up with a list of documents are not backed up in any way with just the originals filed in the office. Although all our working documents are on remote server’s things such as insurance and tax documents are not secure in any way. I'm not sure at the moment what we are going to do about it but your postings have at least got us thinking and acting on it.:D

As you say John we all learn on forums like this and not just about Trainz. So again thanks very much.

Bill

Thank you for accepting my apologies Bill but it wasn't so much heat of the moment, more like too much wine at dinner yesterday!

I dare say the whole episode provided a bit of light entertainment for some readers.

Rob.

The simple answer is RW3 is going to be better then Trainz 2012. Sadly, We work with an awful company, aka AUran.. They are AWFUL technically support and everything with the GAME seems to just go wrong!

Obvi, I'm leaving for RW3 until I see some HUGE changes.. I don't see how anyone would like Trainz over RW3.. The only thing which stinks is they DON"T have Ed (Who I love) ;/ Yes Euphod - talking about you!

How can you comment negatively about TS12 as you do not show that you have a registered version?

Did you know that N3V is the current game developer? Auran is a memory since about 2009.

Saying that you.... love....Euphod is somewhat strange, in my opinion.

I ....like....the comments Euphod makes and enjoy the content that he has put on the DLS.

Have a great day,

Don't know how he can make claims about railworks3 which is going to be called Trainsimulator 2012 actually, unless he's violating nondisclosure agreement as a beta tester, using a bootleged beta, or is merely making wild accusations with absolutely no thought to the damage to his credibility that will ensue.

It will be released in a few days, since I am a proud owner railworks2 I'll get it for free:hehe: I hope it will be better than the current version, couldn't get any worse. But really until after the 23rd anybody trying to make definitive statements is either lying, violating nondisclosure agreement, breaking the law or just making wild guesses:D

I would like to go over to the dark side as the BR content is massively superior to Auran's.

But the AI is a total let down, it still is not much better than MSTS was, which is a bitter disappointment for me and there are a number of other airers that are not good enough that have already been mentioned in this thread, but leaving all them aside...... it is STILL THAT BLASTED AI that lets the whole thing down.

Hmm, sounds familiar Rob. I tend to post gibberish though! Time for a new "Beer is Brainfood" thread? Only joking.

On topic, I don't have RW and have never planned on getting it (though I wouldn't rule it out) so I can't comment on the pros and cons of either. The one thing I think would put me off is the lack of freeware. That's where Trainz wins for me. The other thing is the ease of making routes in Trainz. I only base this on the experience of RW users who openly admit the route building is not as intuitive as Trainz.

It's one subject where there will never be agreement and we should all accept that some like Trainz, some RW. I fail to see how or why everyone gets so hot under the collar when someone has the cheek to promote one or the other. Given this is a Trainz forum, the mods have shown tremendous levity in allowing it to continue (as they have on numerous occassions) and I'm sure we're never going to see an end to this debate...

Carry on.

Now believe it or not, I'm actually going to give railworks and kuju a compliment. For all you railworks fans, don't read too much into it, for all the Trainz fans no I'm not going over to the dark side:hehe:

So here goes.

At first glance their 3DS Max exporter plug-in seems a bit fancier than the one for Trainz. There you go, you see I am capable of saying something nice about kuju and railworks:D

I have just looked on youtube and i must say the lighting on the trains and the real rain looks very good..but in all the clips ive seen there,i have never seen and industry based sessions like Trainz has with loading and unloading coal, wood, oil, grain, containers, cars to name but a very few..

Something to keep in mind, a lot of the old brew crew videos of Trainz looked a whole lot better than anything the normal person could ever create in the game.

Now that's not saying that anybody is doing anything wrong or that it's false advertising, I'm just saying chances are a production video trailer for a game is always going to be a lot better than the game itself.

Railworks is more about getting the train from A to B than what it does when it gets there. However passenger enabled platforms pretty much go in by default and there is at least one working mineral tippler in the game, as it's in use on the Phorum Peninsula ng section.
