Railroad Tycoon 3

Ofcourse, this game that was a legend of 2003 of extremely poor graphics, realism, or freedom, is pretty bad and concentrates more on the economical aspects of railways. But it comes with a map editor that has great creation tools. It allows you to create hills on a much larger scale, lets you 'paint' sound over areas, the rivers can go up hills, there is an automatic tree tool where you can add large areas of trees of different mixtures (tropical, swamp, evergreen, etc.), and there is a very useful 'splatter' tool where you can pick three textures that will be randomly scattered in the area you choose. You can even choose what percentage of each texture will be placed.

Apart from that railroad tycoon has nothing on Trainz. Except the trees dont sway ;)

I took a screenshot for something i was doing at the same time, must have got in there somehow :P ive taken it out

TBH I feel that Railroad Pioneer by JoWood has faired better over the last 8 years, it came out at the same time as RT3, but unlike RT3 it still runs perfectly well on modern hardware and OSes.

Sadly it's let down by tender-less tender locomotives and a lack of any sandbox mode :|

(Railroads, Locomotion and Transport Giant all failed to be competition to either RT3 or RP)
