Railroad Songs

I forgot all about the Grateful Dead's "Big Railroad Blues", it was the first song I learned to play on the guitar.

You could count almost any boogie woogie from the 1920's and '30's. The bands travelled by rail back then so the songs picked up the rythm of the wheels along the joints.

Most direct railroad song, Choo Choo Ch'Boogie...

Hmm, here's a few obscure ones:

Renegade Funktrain by Renegade Funktrain (I'm not really into hip-hop/urban beats, but the video clip for this was full of images of Sydney's Cityrail system, including Museum underground station)

Bridal Train by The Waifs (featured Perth's Rail Transport Museum in the video clip, including CG'd images of ex-WAGR Pr class Pacific Pr 521 'Ashburton' - a locomotive that hasn't turned a wheel in steam for over 40 years!) :hehe:

And for the gamers out there:

Mystery Train by Nobuo Uematsu, from Final Fantasy VI (the original version is a funeral dirge, not surprising given that the train in question is a ghost train, but there is also an arranged version of it performed on piano and violin.)

Runaway Train - Eric Clapton & Elton John

and also done by Tom Petty & the HErtbreakers

and also by Soul Asylum apparently

Hey Charlie I still got that 45! :hehe:

As well as an NZRail penknife and coffee mug...

No one seems to have mentioned "Last Train to San Fernando" - can't remember who by - I loved that song when I was like five years old! :hehe:

(Some say I still am five years old (or at least behave like it)) :'(

Cheers

Just found a piece that most probably haven't heard of, on account of being classical music: Arthur Honegger's Pacific 231.

Needless to say, as a piece of music, it's noisy and unmelodious, but it does replicate the sounds of a steam locomotive quite well. Impressionism at it's best. :)

I'd actually forgotten I even had it until I saw the CD of it on my shelf. ;)

Just remembered another oldie: MTA by The Kingston Trio, about a hapless man who ends up getting trapped on Boston's subway due to not being able to pay an exit fare, and is doomed to ride it 'forever' (the song was actually political propaganda).

Funnily enough, apparently the song's story has now entered Boston's folklore too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_on_the_MTA
