I've noticed that, when a lot of people release a new railroad, they often list it is X number of miles long. How do they measure that?

I've noticed that, when a lot of people release a new railroad, they often list it is X number of miles long. How do they measure that?

Easy! They walk along the entire route, count their steps, add up the lenght of each step/stride and voila!, one has the milage of the route :hehe:

Seriously, there are certain programs that do that for you, the names escape me at the moment as I never bothered to measure my routes. I am sure some learned and well informed poster will let you know here.

You can do it with TrainzMap. It will give you the length of the route. There is also a handy little utility on the DLS that you can measure distance between two points, but I can't remember the name of it off hand. Maybe someone will come along and remind me. It's a very handy little utility where you place two markers on your track where you want to measure distance and it will give you the distance between the two markers. Beware, that if there are yards or passing sidings between the two markers, it will calculate the shortest distance.
If no one comes along, I'll look up what it is.

You can use the built-in custom HUD which displays an odometer as you drive.

In Surveyor:
Edit Session Rules > Add > Display Custom HUD > Click the OK tick.
Left click once on "Display Custom HUD" so as to select it > Edit > Select the "Show the custom heads up display" option > Click the OK tick.
Click the OK tick to exit "Edit Session Rules"

You don't need to do anything special in the Driver Session.

Hi.

Me I used a 1 km long train to place my mileage post along the route. You can do that in Surveyor and you get a permanent measurement of your route. Use two Dash 9 engines, 34 wellcars and one caboose and you get a 1 km train. Move it anywhere on your route and place the mile post at each move. Better, use two identical train for quicker measurement. Place the mile post between both train, delete one and add a new one at the other end...

What is trainzmap? Is that a separate program or something built into trainz? If it's separate where can I get it?

It came with TRS2006, but can be downloaded at Vistamare. Personally though, I find Trainzmap a little limited for this function and like the Track Scanner utitility much better.
