how do i convert asset with 4.6 build number to a lower build number so i can use it on TANE

I tried to do this to the Baldwin RF16 i just downloaded for A new era. But when i changed the build number to a lower one, it only gave me a long list of new errors, one of which stated that the build number had to be 4.6 or higher, which was the build number that the game won't recognize.

I want to use the Trainz Forge downloaded EMD E3 but it won't let me due to having a build number of 4.6, which according the the game is unrecognizable and when i try to change the build number to a lower one, i get an error saying that the build number must be 4.5 or higher. There has to be a way to make the asset compatible with TANE as i really want that E3 due to there being no other non payware models of pre E7 style E units in existence.

Just expanding on what grazlash said; while T:ANE SP2 (trainz-build 4.5) can read trainzmesh files, it cannot read PBR texture materials, so the asset will be faulty. There are also several configuration elements that changed between T:ANE and TRS19, in particular the tags that control the LOD system.

I think the only way to get a T:ANE-compatible version of the asset would be if the original creator replaced PBR materials with legacy materials, exported the meshes and re-configured the asset to suit T:ANE. Highly unlikely I would say.

So i basically wasted hours of my day trying to fix faulty assets that will never work no matter what i do.

Probably, but it was only a few hours of 1 day and you gained valuable knowledge of what can and can't be done. So not a total waste at all.
I wish all non payware items were on the download station. At least that place tells you if something's incompatible before you download it. Stuff like this has become a serious problem ever since i started downloading off site items. Almost everything i've tried to download is irreparably faulty except for only 2 things, the Budd Metroliner and N&W steam turbine.

At the minimum the DLS does some compatibility testing when creators upload new assets and it will reject those uploads which have tags and data that do not match the build number stated in the asset config.txt file. Some creators try to get around this by altering the build number to one that they think will work but this usually creates more problems.

The same cannot be said for all 3rd party web sites that host their own content.

Another valuable lesson. Third-party sites have some great-looking things, but the quality control is at best "variable". At least with the DLS you know that its content had to pass certain validation checks in order to be accepted for upload (increasingly so after about trainz-build 2.9). And the web page or Content Manager give you certain minimum information on the build number, compatibility, asset type etc.
