Quick question on backing up assets

Ive come to a conclusion I need to reformat my harddrive and re-install all. So before I do I want to back up downloaded assets first to a second drive. How do I go about this?

Most of the time, this can be done by backing up the UserData folder (which is in the main Trainz install folder), as this contains all the assets.

Once you've reinstalled and re-patched, you can then reimport the content from the backed up UserData folder.

Oh how I wish I had done this before I went out shopping. My son knew I was going to reformat and reinstal. He thought he would give me a hand.........Well Im sure you can understand where that led :(

Don't use the PC unless you already are and get hold of an unformat program unless you son did a low level format which is extremely unlikely you may be able to recover what has seemingly been erased.
http://www.easeus.com/resource/unformat.htm I have used in the past to salvage stuff from formatted drives, not mine I hasten to add!

Too late for all that as windows is fully installed. However I have not given up. I have 2 hardddrives. One was junk - the other well contained where I originally had trainz installed. And guess what - he installed to the junk drive. So Im hoping that things will work out ok. Now question is - do I just reinstall over the top of it or do I copy files first?

An inexpensive memory stick can cost @ $20 USD and hold @ 8GB or more ... a DVD+RW disc (Re-Writable) holds 4.6GB, a double layer DVD+RW holds twice that ... an external hard drive holds 2TB or mor for @ $90 USD.

I copy my "Local" file and put it on and External HD for my TRS2006 ... Your version of Trainz maybe another file to copy to the External HD.

All your custom routes can be copied and saved to a memory stick, DVD+RW, or External HD.

All your payware assets & downloaded CDP's & Error Fixed CDP's can be put on a stack of DVD+RW discs, or an External HD ... in case of total PC failure or re-installation.

Sometimes Trainz acts choppy if you have a million billion trillion assets downloaded.

As well as the 2 500gig drives I have internally, I have an external 1tb drive which I shall copy the files to first before progressing to reinstall the game. Not sure what went wrong when my son installed windows for me but Ive had to redo it anyway as the graphic cards would not give me sli connection. But that is now resolved so once all the important stuff like virus protector etc are done then I shall copy over the files.

Hey!!! Im finally up to the s--l--o--w process of reinstalling TS2009. Only got TS 2012 to do. Then I can worry about all the other stuff I need (for that you should read - 'well maybe need') to make my computing life easier.
