Questions to the community regarding TRS2010

Hi there

I have a few questions regarding the new 2010 version of Trainz...

Firstly, how much of an improvement is this over previous versions???

I decided to buy 2009 and to be quite honest, wish I had saved my money. Whilst there had clearly been some improvements made as far as the detail for what you could create object wise, I am only interested in creating routes not actual things, and overall, when you strip away te vast majority of broken and extremely outdated stuff on the DLS, theres not all that much content to be honest, at least not in my opinion anyway.

I certainly have not seen a great deal of stuff for trs2009 and Auran provided exactly squat in terms of new content to show off their new simulator in 2009 and the previous version to that. I know its a sandbox but I would at least expect a range of up to date objects that can be used to create routes in such a graphically updated version.

So I am interested to know just whats what with this version, the fact that there has been much less time between releases suggests something wonderful with it.

What is the maximum resolution in surveyor when importing DEM data now??

And are there any other significant improvements overall that make this worth the buy??

I must admit that I have been spending most of my time with RailWorks recently, whilst TRS2009 was installed and loaded up exactly 3 or 4 times.
RailWorks seems to be improving all the time as far as what you are able to do with it, and whilst the learning curve for route building is significant, its very rewarding when you can.

Ok, after reading that thread it has convinced me to give it a go :D

I especially like the fact that it can use 5m elevation data, that means I can put my 5m BlueSky UK data to work properly.

A little disappointed with Auran at the moment over digital download issues though. It appears one of the download parts has a problem (the 1st bin file) and after looking around this forum, it appears that has been the case for a considerable amount of time now with out follow up to those who have complained or indeed being fixed.

That is quite poor service at the end of the day, I am currently downloading the other parts but do not wish to have to wait around indefinitely for Auran to pull their finger out.

See announcements, they are sorting it now, installing New Servers, I think it is fairly obvious that the existing ones nearing the end of their useful life! ;)

I assume you are using a downloader that resumes as not using one is bound to result in failure with large files combined with the flaky state of the servers.
If using, as recommended Free Downloader, judging by the amount of failures reported by people using it, I suspect it doesn't always resume properly so I'd suggest using a better downloader. I use Linux for downloads and most internet stuff so am a bit out of touch with what currently works ok in Windows and unable to suggest a reliable one.

The server upgrade is a separate issue from the current trs 2010 download page not working, however regardless of that, they answered my ticket within a couple of hours to say they would fix the digital download links and behold, they have done just that very quickly.

So I am now in the process of downloading the last link and waiting in anticipation.

So let me get this straight. As a TRS2006 user for some time, I more than used to "fixing" assets. They all need fixed!

Now I want to upgrade. Does that mean the fixing cycle repeats.

And... Since I have neither 2009 or 2010, do I need both?

As I read all the above post, yes all of them, I would appear at
this point all I need is to upgrade to 2010 and I get the whole enchilada.
True or false?

The only other 'problem' area I see is the mention of ATI graphics problems.
Since I just upgraded the computer with an ATI card of the latest incarnation, ATI 5850, is this going to put a bitter taste to a good experience?

As far as cost, its darned cheap. Givin the hours and hours spend enjoying the versatility of the software, it works out to pennies and hour.

And for Auran, BRAVO. As a retired programmer, I have a great deal of appiciation for what makes this thing tick. Its really amazing it works at all.
Although most of my experience was with database software, that is indeed
a great deal of what makes Trainz do its thing. Again, Great work Auran.
Your detractors have no clue what makes it all get on the display.

Nuff said... looking for answers. Thanks to all for a very informative if not
somewhat confusing thread.

1) No. Both 2009 & 2010 have an option for "compatibility mode" on/off (tick box from the File-> options menu).
In Compatibility mode, lots of the 2004/2006 content will run - for example, I've spent some time with Banks Heathz (and BR Electric blue) session in 2010. The session runs the same in 2004 as in 2010. A number of the assets are shown as "faulty" in CM (content Manager) - but this is a warning only.
Thwere's some routes & content specially for 2009 & 2010, but it's not quite enough to use only "native" mode (IMO)

2) You don't need both 2009 and 2010. 2010 is sufficient.

3) If you're into UK Steam operations, you could not do better than buy the Settle & Carlisle Add-in.

Hope that helps,

Colin
