Questions about Multiplayer -- new to train sims

Hi folks. I'm new to train sims but am getting interested in them and am shopping around at the moment. I thought I might come on and get some opinions. I am looking at Trainz and Railworks -- and I am NOT looking for a discussion about comparing, contrasting, pros, cons, etc. What I AM looking for is a more detailed description of what you do in Trainz multiplayer.

Multiplayer content for games tends to be the make/break point for me in selecting them....I'd love to know how in depth Trainz MP is.

For the most part, when I've seen people referring to Trainz Multiplayer (which there's a lot about it in this forum) it's usually that each player has a train and it usually involves picking up and dropping off goods at industries.

There are certain provisios though. The majority of the multiplayer users use the latest Trainz version (TS12, not to be confused with TS2012 which is Railworks 3), and with the latest patches applied. In addition to this, all multiplayer activity takes place through the developer's servers (N3V).

Other users may be able to give more in-depth explanations than this, as I haven't got round to testing Multiplayer yet, and can only speak from what I've read so far.

Thank you for your help shane, I also bugged another user on skype, and he gave me some good info. I went ahead and purchased TS12 and am enjoying the single player part now. I hope to dive deep into Multiplayer soon.
