Hello everybody!

I have a question for you about Trainz Railway Simulator 2006.

I'm gonna buy this game, but first i just wanna ask you:

Can we build our own railroads on that game?

I just wonder, because I don't know if there a difference between Trainz "Railway" og Trainz "Railroad" Simulator 2006.

Best regards,
NorwegianTrainz

Yes you can build your own virtual railway :)

I would consider getting Trainz 2009 or Trainz 2010 insyead of Trainz 2006.

Cheers

Trent

Thank you so much!!!:D

I'm really looking forward to play the game.

I have Trainz 2009, but I can't play it on a Windows XP 2003, too high system requirements. I also have Rail Simulator, same stuff.
I can only play those games on my laptop, but it gets so hot that it turns itself off, so I can't play the game that long...
But I can play Trainz 2006 on the XP :)

Best regards,
NorwegianTrainz

Cool mate, welcome to the addiction we all suffer, route creation. Trainz is a hobby not a game :)

Cheers

Support for TRS2006 is due to be withdrawn by Auran in September. We don't know the full details yet, but it may be impossible to download the 100,000 available assets from the Download Starion after that date. You may find yourself paying for the privilege.

Most people say TS2010 makes less demand on your computer than TRS2006. It has nothing to do with XP, it's your computer. Try knocking some of the settings like Shadows back to Zero or close to Zero. That should improve things a little.

This is going to be intresting in September considering I will have 6 months left on my first class ticket at that time.

Also, I understand why they are doing this but doesn't it seem strange that they will pull support like that. I would think that it could hurt new sales rather than help as who wants to buy a product that the developer is going to make obsolete just so they can sell more product. Also, it wouldn't give a warm and fuzzy feeling about buying a lifetime FCT.

What's next, 2010 becomes obsolete in 2012?

Like I said, it will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. :mop:

Hi LouP,

From my reading of the Trainz Life-Cycle Policy, anyone with a First Class Ticket won't notice any change. As long as you support Trainz, I think Auran promises to support you.

Once again from my reading, anyone with a version of Trainz prior to, and including TRS2006, will have to purchase a FCT to access the Download Station. Microsoft doesn't support MSTS in any way or form, so I think it's fair that Auran sets some kind of cut-off point also.

There are many arguments for and against Auran's action (?) I say action (?) because it hasn't been implemented yet, and it may be modified.

The thing is, if you pour a few bucks into Auran's coffers every year or so, they'll probably continue purring along like a well fed cat. People who haven't purchased TS2010 (including myself) aren't contributing anything unless they have a FCT (and I don't), so we really don't have much of an argument. It's the same in politics. If you don't vote, don't complain!

Fortunately for the likes of me, Auran is still prepared to support TS2009 for another 3 years before they cut me off.

The Life-Cycle Policy is four years, not two. Therefore TS2010 owners won't have to worry until TS2014. Without some kind of Life-Cycle Policy, there may not be a TS2014, or a Download Station.

Well that's awesome news and makes perfect sense. :) It did not seem logical that they would cut of the income flow from the FCT owners that are using 2006. :p

I know that I will eventually have to switch over as there will be less and less develpers making content for 2006 but it will be nice to not having to worry about being shut off. I went through the same process using MS Flight Simulator so it's not new to me.

LouP73, I notice you also own Trainz Classics. As these are still supported through the Life-Cycle Policy, you would still have access to the DLS anyway. Of course your download speeds would be about 4kbs. It's the FCT that gives you the faster download speeds, but any version of TC should allow you to access anything on the DLS anyway.

John

Thanks John,

Yes, I do own TC and never thought of that. And you are right in that the main reason I got the FCT was for the download speeds, I don't know how people can stand 4kbs per second anyway.

I expended on my TS2006 install instead of TC as I seem to get better performance with 2006. If/when I get a new computer, I'll be trading up to the latest version of Trainz. Train Classics never seemed to really catch on for some reason and it may be for the same reasons I stuck with 2006. I am on the fence about the new PC because some of the screenshots I've seen with the expanded amount of greenery are breathtaking and look like photographs to me.

Just though that you might want to know that route for route, scene for scene, 09 gives me about 10-12% better frame rates with more viewing distance (no buildings or hills popping up out of nowhere) on my somewhat dated PC (3.0Ghz P4, 2.0Mb ram, 256 Mb Nvidia GC and WIN XP)

2009 does work on XP, however, if your problem is intergrated graphics cards of the intel variant, it may not work properly. You need to give us details of your system.

I wouldn't recommend TRS2006 as it is, as support will end in 3 months time. If price is an issue, I recommend TC3 as it is based on pretty much the same base as TRS2006, with some updates and works on most hardware 06 works on. I think there are a few exceptions, but I haven't encountered many yet.

I can't run TS2010 on my laptop but TS2009 runs okay with a bit of tweaking and has a great deal more built in content than TRS2006, plus various physics improvements. Plus you can add the 2009 updated version of TC3 (aka S&C 2009) to it rather than trying to get TRS2006 into TC3, a very satisfactory situation from the route builders POV.

Guys,

I just checked the MINIMUM specs for 2010 and it requires a 3.4 gig :hehe: processer as a minimum requirement. I have a 2.8 gig. No way am I runnung that puppy until I get a new machine.

What laptop do you have Vern just out of curiosity? A couple of my older laptops (Toshiba Portege M200 - can be picked up for £200 or less second hand, and its a tablet PC - has a GeForce 5200Go 32mb card IIRC and an Acer Aspire 3023WLMi which has an ATi Radeon X700 128mb) run Trainz 2010 quite well. If you fiddle with the settings. Interestingly, my Asus eeePC 901 which has a GMA950, won't run TRS2010.

LouP

Acer Aspire 3023WLMi = 1.8ghz SEMPRON processor
Toshiba Portege M200 = 1.6ghz Pentimun M processor (the 1mb variant)

Both ran it. The processor speed you can pretty much ignore as once processors were all created equal, now days, mobile processors are designed to be equal to their desktop counterparts (except Atom processors and some cheaper netbook processors, but we will skip over those), the mobile processors have a few tricks to do this, which the desktop ones don't usually have.

What really matters to Trainz however, is the graphics chip or graphics card, a nVidia or ATi card, be it a 5 year old one or new one will run TRS, I yet to try 2010 on a ATi Radeon 9700 or equvilant GPU. Granted, you'll have performance problems.

That is why I mentioned 09 in my post. If you have add-on graphics card or can get one installed (preferably Nvidia) your computer should run TRAINZ2009 just fine.

I have 512 MB RAM on my XP, and the game needs 1 GB RAM...

RAM is probably the best and cheapest upgrade you can make on an older computer. The Acer should take 2 gig and that's what I'd be adding. In Australia that's about $80.
