prototypical train handling

A question for you experienced trainz hoggers. Say I had a light engine movement that I was trying to keep at or under 10mph...would I occasionally apply independent, occasionally make an application to train brake (is this called a service application?) or would I drop from notch 1 to nuetral? What is everyones opinions?

back off the throttle and apply ind brake - just a little bit. unless you are in hilly terrain you probably never need to leave notch 1 to maintain 10 mph... most of the time you will just be idling.

makes sense, thanks gentlemen. A question about train brake, prototypically would it apply engine brakes if there was no consist attached in air line? In trainz it works maybe like a slight application of independent.
