Problems With Automatic Train Driving

The problem I'm having is with the "drive to" (station or trackmark) in TRS 2004. When I right click the train and select the location I want it to drive to, the trains always take an unusual route, such as via sidings, or driving along the right-hand of a double track (when I'd want it to go on the left as all signals are arranged for). Even if the points are set to enable the "correct" route these will change automatically.

Another problem I'm having is with speed limits and I can't seem to get trains on auto to exceed 40mph on auto (though they will do on a return route) which is not ideal for an HST.

Any suggestions for overcoming these (other than using manual control)? I'm convinced I'm overlooking something obvious.

Is this in 2004? AI trains will take any route they "see" as the shortest to get to their assigned destination. You must help them by adding track marks to guide them along the way.

Driving AI wasnt really improved much until somewhere around TS2009.

Trains will always try to find the quickest, shortest route to a destination - even if that route doesnt follow track regulations or ends up in a siding. Track Markers and Track Direction Markers will greatly assist you here as well.

Exactly. Take the UMR in TS12 for example. In addition to track direction markers, he has trackmarks between each major area (eg. OMARIN WEST CONTAINER PIER) to guide trains along the correct track. He also has several siding bypass tracks to allow thru trains to stay on the mainline.

If you use the "Drive Via Trackmark (Name of Trackmark)" as a driver order, the driver will drive to the next destination by going through that trackmark.

Drivers will NEVER EVER drive against a Track Direction Marker. With some complicated working you can force them to do so, but they will try incredibly hard in order to get around a marker against them.

I have to differ here as I have had the experience of drivers going against Track Direction Markers several times until I got the signalling right for that section of track. Often the problem of AI drivers doing odd things comes down to lack of or improper signalling.

Cheers
Russell.
