problem with HOG

I'm learning how to make DEM with Microdem and HOG. Following a tutorial on the net I feel success is just around the corner. :)

The problem I have encountered is with the HOG program. The .tga file from Irfanview loads okay. When clicking on the generate button the progress bar functions okay. It does not generate a file though. When I "redo" the process and clik on the last "PICK" button for the output file, it shows it is already created. I'm at a loss here.

I am running Win7 and have set the options for viewing any and all files on the computer, hidden, system and all.

I'm also not having success in generating the TIGER lines in Microdem. The tutorial is old and the Microdem version has changed some.

Thanks,
Randy

I found the file, finally. Instead of the program saving it in the HOG folder, it saved it to the User/myname folder. Must be a Win 7 thing.

Got it into trainz and it worked. There are spikes though, gotta tweak things out a bit.

I'm also not having success in generating the TIGER lines in Microdem. The tutorial is old and the Microdem version has changed some.

Older MicroDems had an option 'Overlay > All Tiger' which would automatically locate and overlay all required Tiger files.

Newer versions have 'Overlay > Vector Outlines' but you need to navigate to and manually select each Tiger file.

Otherwise the procedure is as per the tute...

G'day Sek_Hakuna,

Also, Dermmy has neglected to mention that the spikes (and possibly any untoward depressions that you might not have come across just yet, are a consequence of 'glitches' in your DEM data. These are noticeable as black and/or white areas in the otherwise very colourful 'display' of the DEM data produced by MicroDEM. Black areas produce spikes, white areas create depressions. If you are using version 3 of the SRTM 90 meter (3 arcsec) data, there ought not be too many of these (one of the advantages of version 3 is the elimination of such anomalies). However, earlier versions were rife with them. Unfortunately, they do still crop up now and again and in order to eliminate them, I use a 'free' version of a program called SRTMFill, a small utillity which you can get from 3D Nature, here...

http://www.3dnature.com/srtmfill.html

...and which, after installing and used 'upon' your extracted DEM files (note, they MUST be extracted first) - you simply open the file with SRTMFill, which creates a new *.hgt file in the same folder where the original is located, that you then use in lieu of the original (I usually delete the original and rename the adjusted file as per the original) - will totally eliminate such issues...
