Preserved American Diesels

Off the Deep End
Hello all, right now I am compiling a huge list of preserved American Diesels spread across all loco generations and makers. This could be for a possible book, maybe. Anyhow, I was just wondering if anyone was aware of any locos I may have missed. "Preserved" is a loose term for this project. Preserved in this case mean any that exist, whether the locos are in museums, on shortlines, tourist lines or still on Class 1s. All I have right now is ALCO/MLW/Bombardier and Atlas Car & Manufacturing Co.. PM me if you would like to see the list and then let me know if I am missing any. Thanks to all that helped.

This was the GE prototype 80 toner. Which makes it a rare breed, and a very interesting locomotive to work with and on. She has a lot of rudimentary parts on her, for example the light switches in the cab above... Or the fact that the dual control stands are linked together by no other then a bicycle chain hidden under the cab floor.

Her newer sibling 0900 Is what GE came up with for the 80 toner after ruling out all the problems with 0901 and her sisters. Originally The U.S. Navy was the owner of 0901 and in a sense the guinea pig, it was then sold to Pfizer.

After awhile Pfizer no longer had a need for there industrial switchers, so they donated as many of them as they could, and each one also came with a tractor trailer load of parts. This one happened to land at the Valley Railroad in Essex, CT. Where it showed up with 1 seized engine, it was then nursed back to operating condition.

Unfortunately now though as of the end of the summer, she cracked a wheel. So we must wait for shop room, as it is estimated to take about 500 hours of man labor to replace the broken bogey. Thank god for the tractor trailer load of parts!

I will get a build date on her soon. Slips my mind at this current time.
Edit: just came to me the year it was built. 0901 was built in 1940, then 0900 was built 7 years later in 1947.

Well, to start, you don't mention two ALCO PA-4s, NKP 190 (ex FNMex; ex DH 18; ex ATSF 62L) and ATSF 59-L (ex FNM; ex DH 16; ex ATSF 59L). The ATSF unit is being rebuilt at Museum of the American Railroad, in the DFW area, and I think the NKP unit is being rebuilt in the Portland, OR, area. You're also don't mention the RS3 in Kansas.

Also, to start the EMD section, there is RI 630, which was at one time at the Kansas City railroad museum, was moved to Kansas, and I believe has again been moved to a museum in Iowa.

I thought the NKP 190 and the AT&SF ones were PA-1s, but then again something in the back of my mind says D&H rebuilt them and probably re-designated them.

As for the RS-3 in Baldwin City, Kansas (Midland railway), there are actually two. MKT 142 started life as an RS-3, but was sent to the chop shop during the Deramus era and emerged with an EMD long hood and traction motors(http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=123193) as an "RS-3M". currently, she's painted in Deramus/Barringer era "Barringer Red" (http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=722854).

The other RS-3 is a NYC unit, No. 8255. don't have much on her, but i know that for the most part she's bone stock. CRI&P (Rock Island) is also well represented at the Midland with E6A 630 and E8A 652.

I Dont Know If You Wanna Count This

this is VE 502
the only remaining VE Dieseil, i beleive
and she is one of two 44tonners that the VE Had
VE502 Had A Sister
#501, The VE Had No Purpose For Two 44tonners, So 501 Was Scrapped
And 502 Remained Till The End Of Service
After I Dont Know What Exactly Happened But She Ened Up With The SP And Later Ended Up At The Western Railway Museum Of Fairfield Ca.
She Is My Favorite Locomotive Of All Of WRM's Collection
And She Will Be For A Long Long Time
I Hope This Makes It Into The List
Merry Christmas To All And Happy New Year!

Don't worry every one, I won't forget to do the FOUR PAs that exist, as when I say American Diesels, I mean those that were built in the US or Canada (MLW) so, the locos could be in exotic countries but still count as they were built here in the US. So, there is NKP 190 in Oregon, two in Mexico and one in Frisco, Texas.
I will continue to edit the first post and update the list of locos, and there are a few more.
Whitepass, you may get a large list on Google, but I am creating a comprehensive list of ALL of the preserved US locos. (Which includes those in Museums, tourist lines, shortlines and if any exist on Class 1s.)

i can get you alot more from a railroad museum in portola Ca. if you would like

So, there is NKP 190 in Oregon, two in Mexico and one in Frisco, Texas.

There may not still be two in Mexico. the two that were brought back to Texas and Oregon were in pretty bad shape, and I think were brought back because the Mexican railroad had planned to scrap the lot.

Otherwise, you might consult the website of the Museum of the American Railroad <http://www.museumoftheamericanrailroad.org/Exhibits/EquipmentRoster.aspx>, where there is a list of the locomotives they own. I believe I missed an Alco, too: the RSD-1. Additionally, the Illinois Railway Museum, <http://www.irm.org/roster/diesel.html> at Union, Illinois has an impressive list of diesels preserved, as well, including an ALCO RSD-15.

There actually are two in Mexico, they both are in museums. So, would anyone mind proofreading my list so far to check for any mistakes (Locos, numbers, locations).

I think a Website would be better than a book as you will probably miss some just due to the number of Diesels made, 28,000+ class 1 in use in 1960.

That is a possibility, Whitepass, as my list is already up to 7 pages and I haven't even finished ALCO. With most of the pre-1970 diesel classes, I am including all of the locos that still exist. (Examples that I am not doing that with are the GP35 and onward in that series as many are still running). With most of the post-1970 classes, I am only doing the ones that are on tourist roads or are in museums. Any takers on checking the list?
Here are those 2 PAs that are in Mexico.

I Don't know if someone said this, but those PA's are ex D&H, which are ex-ATSF.(I think, it was in my book called "The Contemporary Diesel Spotter's Guide", in the rebuild section and, in the book "Warbonnets")

I am using that site as a reference point, but I am also using the large loco rosters on Railroad Picture Archives, too.
