Thats right, I'm asking you from your own point of view, what was or is the greatest railroad on our planet? Any country any time. Post only in good manners or constructive criticism.
Cheers!!!

The Lackawanna Cutoff.

"Screw surveying, just build it straight from point A to point B. No questions; get to work"

And they went and did it.

The Trans Siberian, just laying the track was a feat in million, but
it must be a mother of a run for engineers.

I would have to say Western Maryland. (Wild Mary)

They had extremely clean locomotives, and ran a proud Railroad.

And they are easy to model. I have brass models of nearly every loco, some, I have the whole fleet, like the F3's. They only had two of these, and I have the 2 BL2's. And the list goes on. Three challengers, four 4-8-4's, many 2-8-0's.

If anybody is considering modeling the WM, and needs a picture of any loco's, I would be happy to assist.

Second, or shared first in my book, would have to be the Nickel Plate Railroad. The strong statement they made hauling very fast freight, at breakneck speeds, with those superb creations of man, the Berkshires heading up the front end.

If I come back in another life, I would cherish the ability to run one of those locos. And they kept with steam for a lot longer than just about all the main roads.

It's a difficult decision to say what is the best, as it is subject to your own impressions. I am sorry if my ideas conflict with others. At least we can remember, and model all the favourites we love.

I would have to go with the Reading its subsidiaries the Lehigh and New England, and the Central of New Jersey, along with their good pals the Western Maryland.

The Reading hauled more anthracite than any other railroad in American history. The company also owned alot of the mines, though due to the fact that they were feared to be a monopoly, they had to split the coal mining company and the Philadelphia and Reading into two separate companies. The Reading transported coal, freight and passengers between Reading, Philly, Pottsville, New York and many other points in Pennsylvania. They also were a major bridge line for other railroads such as the PRR and NYC. They were in serious competition with the PRR and this even got so bad that the PRR layed tracks paralell to Reading trackage to attempt to take customers away. The Reading also constructed America's largest railyard in Saint Claire in 1913. The Reading was also very friendly with the WM and was used as a bridge line and an interchange point with them.

Oddly enough it was reported here in Gt Britain that an international magazine linked to tourism stated that in again an international survey the West Highland Railway came tops. Living in Glasgow I have travelled on it not just to Fort William but the extension up to Mallaig a few times. The Glenginnan Viaduct is something and it corsses the lonely wilderness of Rannoch Moor where the track was originally built withg a foundation of wood, etc due to the boggy ground.

I agree, it is one great line to travel on, at its best when steam hauled. I wonder if Tornado will ever get to Mallaig.

GWR (Great Western Railway). This railway controlled most of the jobs in Swindon and the surrounding area, and it was known to all as "God's Wonderful Railway".

Go Strasburg!

This is going to be a shocker to all.......Strasburg Railroad. Reason for that is because all the staff is extremely friendly (especially the engineers and conductors), and they have a nice fleet of steam locomotives (4 operating ones to be exact). Plus, Strasburg currently has the only operating N&W M class locomotive (4-8-0 #475). Actually, the 475 might be the only N&W locomotive in operation today, but I could be wrong with that one.

RhB (Swiss - Austrian narrow gauge) the whole line is capped by snowy Alpine peaks and the lines cross spectacular deep gaurges and the many looping tunnels never been on it but am busily saving up. This has to be the most spectacular line on earth.

:D

I vote for the C.P.R.

Well, I am extremely opinionated on this subject, and I will admit that there are an awful lot of splendid examples but for me it is the Canadian Pacific Railway.

The company was an inovator (spelling?) in the industry. Once one of the largest parent companies in the world with interest in ships, airlines, trucking, freight shed ops, hotels and restaurants, and railway ops. It operated one of the worst planned routes through the rockies with some of the worst grades of any class 1 railroad.

They experimented with countless locomotive designs in the attempt to conquer the rockies. Some failed, but some like the Selkirk design were the largest in the common wealth at the time.

A very rich history indeed!
