Ports/docks - Steam era

Davie_UCF

Here since 2001, Trainz!!
Hey!

I'm planning to do a seaside terminus with a small branch that goes to a dock on my 60's route but i'm not sure of any content that will suit..

Has anyone got any advice for building a port/dock area? How to make it look good, anything from cranes, buildings, textures, piers, docks, boats?

If someone happens to have a plan of a steam era port/docks that would be awesome to get ideas from in a prototypical sense!

Thanks for the help
David

Hi - Sounds like a good idea.

May I suggest you look at "Grahams Mill" (KUID:78925:100292) by cameronb. Although it was created in 2004, the dock area does seem pretty realistic and, if a similar layout was built, updated with the better quality building/scenery assets that are now available (as well as passenger enabled stations), I'm sure it would be a winner.

Have a look at Grahams Mill - when you open Surveyor, click Ctrl F (Find) and type in "Port Poston". That should inspire you!

Hi,

Just a thought while we are on the subject of harbours. Would it be possible to build a loadable ship, that can be configured to take lots of products in fairly large quantities and sent through an Iportal. If this is possible it would mean the reciever would not have to have the same rollingstock as the sender, only rollingstock capable of transporting the same product, and the ship itself ofcourse. Many interesting operations could be setup this way.

Hope someone will think abaout this,

Geee Curtis no one ever showed any interest when we devised the rail to dock to ship loading system ......................

Sorry if I sound a bit of a smart a%#* above I think it is a great idea and would love to see a layout creator run with the idea........
This system will work in trainz.......depending on available models
Train Taxi Truck can exchange passangers freight and baggage/mail with the Ship via the Dock visabile passangers on deck cargo in the hold tested over and over in 04/06..........porthole to porthole via the docks so imagine a coastal route seeing shipping as you go along

I would like to implement this in my route If i get there, certainly would add for some atmosphere to see a ship move off..

So it works? A train can unload to a ship? Any thread about this or guide?

And thanks for the extra replies, i'm checking them out!

You either have a train disguised as a ship running on invisible track under the water, or you could have a ready-made industry with animated ships, but I think that would be cheating.

Hi Davie,

Have a look in this old thread here: http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=9348
Some of the pictures are gone now, but most are still there. Much may be before your period of interest, but we did get a transfer dock (mostly) working - you can unload a train to the dock, and then load a ship from the dock, or the other way around. The only thing you can't do is unload to a (ship / train) that is already parked at the dock when you are unloading.
Come to think of it, we may not have released any ships that match the products the dock will transfer; we'll have to take care of that....

I made a pair of kick-back dumpers which are interactive for coal and designed to load Vucans interactive barge (empty). They are quite large - possibly bigger then you have in mind. If you do decide to use one please be sure to read the README file in the folder. They are complex items requiring setup in surveyor.

What I've done previously is link two PL assets so the unloading of one product at PL 'A' transferred the goods to PL 'B' for loading. If you have 'A' set up for rail and 'B' set up for ships (via invisible rail - such as Pencil's excellent steam schooner), you can transfer one to the other in real time.
I've successfully tested this with 'A' being SG and 'B' being NG and vice-versa so it should also work just as well with ships.

See how fast this thread fell off the first page if its not normal trainz them its doomed....but there are many interesting serenios useing the interaction of the railway but .......................
heres how it works the Flying Scotsman delivers the Illfated passangers to the Titanic at a Dock same height as Vulcans set up and the dock matches up and connects to Vulcans Wooden dock spline

if anyone wants to create this sort of layout interchange I think we just might be interested in helping getting a showcase off the ground .................over to you the interested home viewer

Oh well lack of interest again ..............................................

Hi Dredd,

Sorry for not "putting my hand up" before.
(It's waving like mad right now!):Y::wave:

I was distracted having recently come home from our little exploratory expedition; looking at our Narrandera_Tocumwal project with Craig.

This scenario is just what we will be needing Dredd!.

We will have the need to load cargo & passengers onto #@***@#. ( :o )
the passengers possibly from a bus or such like.

Another thing I would be very interested in, is embarking/disembarking passengers onto an $#%%^&$#. (another :o:eek: ....all very hush-hush )

Could you PM or email me please so we can discuss.

thanks,
