I can make a train disapear in a portal, but I cant get the same train to come out of a differant portal on the same route. thanks funnnyfarm

Portals

You have to click on the "?" symbol and name the 2 portals, and click on the specifications of what you want each portal to consume, emit, and how often.

also

portals because its probly better to not to use portals just in case
you have problems
like

@ derrail
@crashes
@and singals prblems

:(

Not so Tline. I,ve used portals on every layout and never had a problem.
Always use portal manager(AJS site) and youwill find great things will follow. I currently have about 12 trains exiting portals on the midland360 layout and plan more. For consists to return, set up a portal on its own and click the train return with timer. tell it where to go(politely) and watch the action.

Hi,

in order to get a train to teleport between portals, you need to use the
"iportal" - note the "i".

Use these for all the protals on the route, then, as written above, use the "?" button in surveyor.
Then you can set the details of where to send the train (each portal has to have a unique name - case sensitive).

ASAIK, the route is fixed - you can't have train 1 emitted at portalB, then train 2 at portalC.

Don't worry autchly i think i know hay to use an portal

A cautionary note. If you use one portal to generate a train, and direct it to exit at another portal, which in turn directs the train to reappear at the original portal or yet another, your layout will eventually be overrun with trains. The original portal will generate a train every # minutes, in addition to the reappearance of the original train (s).:hehe: and so on ad infinitum until trainz grinds to a halt.

I've done this before using the aforementioned iPortal for the purpose of using an off-route 'staging' yard that's in essence just a flat baseboard with a giant ladder for when I'm testing stuff in a route to store stuff in.

The key is that you should ideally want to have a pair of iPortals for each line you want to connect. Having more than one iPortal funneling trains into a single track on the other portal can be potentially disastrous.

The only two things you need to really change in the iPortal settings to get this to work is the Destination Portal ID - which is the name of the portal object you want to send the trains to (easily accomplishing with the text box on the top of the object properties window) and changing the send to computer from 'Via Internet' to 'Local' or something similar, (I haven't used them in a while so I don't quite remember the exact wording, meh).

In fact you can set this up so that the portals and send each other trains both ways, they both just need to have the other portal's name in their respective Destination Portal ID fields. A word of warning, though - the iPortals work by checking to see if the is a train 'available' to emit that has been set at a given interval of time (you can change that in the properties as well) if you have lots of traffic expected to be using the portal, you'll need to set it to check - and therefore emit - trains over a larger period of time. Otherwise the portal may end up spitting out consists right into the face of an on-coming train. Also make sure to give a wide berth of trackage between the portal and nearby signals. The driver AI won't obey any track signals until they have fully cleared the last car out of the portal, so keep that in mind if the portal is located close to a junction or interchange with cross traffic.

If you use the iPortals to send them to another computer, you won't retain control of the train. Essentially it's the equivalent of picking the train up off the tracks of your model railroad, driving it to your buddy's house and putting it on his layout for him to run. Of course if they send it back through the iPortal you can control it again too. Makes some great quasi-multiplayer scenarios if you can get the coordination down with your friends (i.e. a coal industry on one route feeds coal to a power station on the other, requiring some sort of timetable for a steady supply). I think the two Tidewater Built-In routes in '09 were made to work like that.

Portals

Something to use if you have more then one iportal is panel selector rule kuid2:30671:60010:3> This rule will give you a little orange box on lift top of your screen. Clicking on it in driver will list your iportals and you can make changes to them. (like sending a train to another iportal) The only things that need to be setup is the name, the iportal ID,the montering time, and manual or auto.
Naming: Anything you like
Iportal ID: Anything you like.( make it short and lower case )
Next two leave them blank (fill them in in driver in case you want to iportal someone in another country)
Send trains: via within this computer ( you can send trains to another route that has iportal(s) in your game. Internet means you can send trains to anyone in the world that has a iportal as long as you know there user name & iportal ID)
Check for trains: every___ minute ( i set this to max 60 minutes this will give you time to send a lot of trains to another route without a train emitting before you are ready, you can click on create a train at any time up to that time then the train will emitt on it's own.
Drive mode: Set it your way

I have a question on the re-rail portal. In s a nutshell, I can not get it to work. Once I sent a train and it de-railed inside the portal! I am using 2009. Thanks,

Johnny

This may seem an odd question, but have you made sure the portal is not hanging over the edge of the map (into a blank space)? Strange things can happen if it is. Also, make sure you have sufficient track in front of the portal (before any junctions/signals) to handle the length of the train.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info Danny5! :)

I use the Re-rail portal extensively and have found that defective railcars in the consist will cause the train to reverse as it is being emitted and then derail. Having it hang out over the edge of the route does not cause any problems for me.

I taught myself to use portals and discovered a few self inflicted pitfalls along the way. Make sure your portal is on level ground. Some of my trains were going into a portal and stopping. I took the camera inside and found a sheer drop. oops! Did a fix but not tested yet. Another portal I had, trains would not emerge. As a last resort I took my camera inside and found what looked like the roof of a locomotive sticking out of the ground! Replaced portal, trains now emerge. If, like me you have downloaded loco,s/ rolling stock that doesn,t work, make your portal consist on a convenient piece of track to check that it works then delete. you also need to check that a portal driver has not already been assigned to a consist on the route (see "rules").
IMPORTANT. When a train emerges from a portal it will remain under portal control until it is about three quarters of the way out. Do not place signals/ point switches too close to portal exits.
Useful tip. I wanted freight trains and a regular passenger service to operate from one end of a route so I installed 3 portals. One for trains exiting the route, one for a 30 minute passenger service and one for any one of 3 freight consists every 25 minutes entering the route.
Another tip is not to have trains emerging at too frequent intervals. This can cause congestion further down the line and also, too many trains running around can cause lag problems.
