Poorly painted assets

This thread is for everyone who makes old and damaged assets, or just likes to use them. Devotees of the derelict, adorers of the abandoned, scavengers of scrap - feel free to share screenshots of poorly painted assets here. :)

Please note, there is another thread of the same name but the topic is entirely different.

I'll start off with an old wooden church that I drove past the other day. It just cried out to be captured as a 3D model.

Maybe painted very well 40 years ago but definitely needing some TLC. That is rather exceptional.

I am puzzled by the square tree trunk. Perhaps it isn't square but for this view it looks a bit odd.

It's one of Pofig's Speedtrees. Sometimes they get stuck in wierd low poly states.
The square trunk shape is perhaps accentuated by the tree shadow. Correct me if I'm wrong Deane, but that nice dappled shadow looks like one of yours.

With the shadows from your series which I use, I find that lowering them a tad puts them closer to, or at, ground level which then removes the lower band of shading giving that "short dark sock" look to the bottom of the trunk. It would also no longer accentuate the square section of the trunk, making it look rounder all the way up. Cover the small bottom shaded bit with your little finger to see what I mean

I'm liking the building very much. Badly painted maybe, but reflecting how it has deteriorated in reality. As a model, the textures have been captured and applied superbly.

Well up to your total rubbish standards Deane.:D

Very nice work on the church Deane!!

I'll have to find a spot for this one on some of my routes :)

Regards

Liking the bump map.

Well spotted Adam. Unfortunately to get that crisp resolution on the peeling paint, I had to use 2048 x 2048 textures which totalled 30 MB in the final asset, or 19 MB as a CDP. I did try 1024 x 1024 but the loss in quality is quite noticeable if you have seen the hi-res version first. I'm not sure what to do with it from here.

Thanks Zec. Finally a normal map that did what I want on a photo-texture! I'd love to upload it now, but your company's lovely "life-cycle" policy prevents it. Until T:ANE comes along, the best I can offer is a couple more screenies from different angles.

[For those more interested in the Pofig tree, notice how it now displays the proper texture on the trunk? It did it all by itself].

What if you put it on a third party site or send it to someone who could upload it to the DLS for you? It just looks so great!

Stunning work on that church Dino, this will be a thread to follow,I've always been a heavy user of you content.
I'm a big fan of 'back-block' out of the way railroading and you content always fits the bill for what I'm trying to model. This scene is in Brady,TX,USA.

@Kingston and Zorro - Likewise, I'm a big fan of your screenshots. I don't always comment, but I do notice them! I love that cracked road. Do we have a name/kuid for it?

By the way, and just to be clear, I didn't intend for this thread to be a showcase only for my content. I do want it to be a place where anyone can post shots of derelict things in general, no matter who made them. So it's quite open.

Suffering from neglect

.
Here’s a shot which represents examples of just three of the creators work I like to use. There are many more though. This just happens to be the bit I’m working on at the moment.

The bridge is by samplaire <kuid:132952:101015> SAM VS Bridge 6.6m v3 H20m. OK, not painted – but beautifully textured. I particularly like the stonework and the white deposits leeching out of the ornate bits of the masonry above the piers.

The building on the left is <kuid:149987:25888> FMA Abandoned bld 5 by vendel. Wonderful flaking and grimy paintwork. The canopy and plinth are 3D, which adds to the overall effect as do the shadows beneath the canopy and roof guttering.

The barn is one of Deane’s <kuid:68213:27075> Derelict barn 06 . This one seems to fit in any landscape in any country. I do like the rusty roof and weathered walls.

NB some assets may be kuid2: etc, but I only put in the two main numbers separated by a single colon on a DLS search to get a result for a specific asset. (Putting in the word "kuid", additional colons and suffix numbers, or anything else results in “No Downloads Found”). To get returns of all of the creators work, put in the author’s User ID number, without a colon.

If you go to the DLS to search these out, note that they are all well described, and have properly representative thumbnail images. This attention to detail at the DLS upload stage not only allows the asset being searched to be easily found, it's also a good indicator that the work will also be well thought through and a first class addition to any layout. Tip: when you find such gems, always do a username (creator) search to get their complete list of work. You won’t be disappointed.

With these ageing, unkempt, structures it’s worth remembering that they rarely live in a pristine location. I therefore like to add some appropriately grimy ground texturing plus bits of foliage around their base, to firmly anchor them into the ground and increase the illusion of neglect.

Finally, a quick word of thanks to all of the great creators who have made this simulator such a joy to use. I can’t think of anything else that could have kept my attention for six years ... and still counting.

Nice pic Casper...

I love that cracked road. Do we have a name/kuid for it?

That's another one in the Funky Road series that hasn't been released. I've been moving things to a new computer and, unfortunately, my copy of TS12 got "lost" in the shuffle, so it, along with some other stuff, will have to wait until TANE comes along.

Cheers,
Fred

Epo, thanks very much, and yes, this is exactly the right place for such screenshots. Let us promote everything that is old, decayed, damaged, worn out or left to rot!
