Hi All
Firstly a couple of things, I have total admiration and gratitude for all the creators of the wonderful items that we can download, also I am completely ignorant when it comes to computers !
What puzzles me is sometimes when I download, lets say a loco, thats just been put up on the DLS its engine spec or sound or bogies are not on the DLS and it will not open in surveyor ? so I change the eng spec from another loco and it opens fine. But why does this happen ? When the creator makes the loco the eng spec must be there in his creation so why does it not appear when downloaded ? if its from a third party he's still downloaded it to his original so where has it gone ?
I hope this makes sense but I just cannot understand it
Thanks in advance for any replies
Cheers
PJ

From what I have noticed is sometimes there are things used that are of an older version of trainz and not on the DL for your version. Make sure all versions are checked when you do a search.

Narrow minds.

Auran does not always add everything the creator sends, until someone accually tries to get it will they send a message to the creator that it is not there, and then the creator has to send it again to them as they do not keep the records. I went through this many times when I was trying to work with thier DLS. This is why I think it better to list assets from a website where the download is a complete unit, everything in one shot! from my website, I put everything needed for my creations. I know this will not work for senarios composed of assets from more than one person, but I only create things to use in the person's personal build. The idea of the game is to make your own layout to me! I still get messages from Auran that someone used my assets and to upload them, yet they will not do so even if I submit them, so all my assets have to come through my website. It is listed from many resource site also. Aurans DLS is a great source, but it does have it's limits!

hello again PJ,
Sometimes in the rush to download I miss the additional assets required to complete the asset.

It hasn't gone anywhere. It is still at the third party site. The creator of the loco may or may not have permission to distribute the asset. The creator only references it in his config file. Some asset creators do not want to put their creations on the DLS presumably because that would cause them to give away distributuon rights to Auran, and not everyone wants to do that. It is a nuisance to track them down sometimes, but it seems to be a fact of life in the game and you learn to adopt a certain amount of patience when dealing with these issues...at least I have.

It seems to me that the main problem comes when an asset references an engine-spec or whatever that is built-in to a previous version of Trainz than the one you are using. Built-in assets are not available at the DLS. Then the item shows as "unknown". I don't really see any solution to this.

If this is the problem, it is Auran's fault, and maybe Mr. Zec should look into it!

Mick,
My solution is quite simple and elegant. I just throw it in the recycle bin. After using Trainz for 8 years, I have passed the stage where I am prepared to fiddle with, and search for, dependencies, no matter how good the asset potentially is. There is just too much good stuff out there that works first time, as it should.

Cheers

OzBoz,

Much more elegant then most users will recognize , a very sensible post !

I agree --- ,DLR

Very interesting replies, thanks to all, I must admit when an item is missing lots of things I do bin it, like OzBoz does as there are some great items around fully complete. I just think it would be easier to use one of the many current assests that are available.
Re Lewis comment. If you've created something for TRS2006sp1 why use old assests that you know will not work ?
I know its a bit dumb of me but IF I were good enough to create something and upload it, I would like to think that many people would enjoy it and using out of date assests can't help this.
Two extra things : Americam Connections...great items : gfisher... such wonderful layouts. : thanks to you both
Cheers

Agreed. If the dependencies can be found on the DLS it's ok, but if it gets to the situation I was describing, I don't usually bother to pursue it.
