N3V needed an replacement for Speedtrees which requires an expensive license to use in Trainz. Plant Factory is a program that has been around for several years in the world of 3D graphics. Due to various reasons, the company that makes it ended up being sold to another company that is primarily in landscape visualization and while at first the new company promised continued support for Plant Factory that has not been the case. Last year, the new company announced that Plant Factory and its big brother Vue 3D were available for free download with no license required for commercial use. They also made available the massive catalog of plants for both programs. The software is still under copyright and may not be resold or distributed except through the owner's website.

N3V saw the potential of using Plant Factory to create trees for Trainz and are currently working to integrate the plants it produces into Trainz Plus and later other versions. There are many features of Plant Factory that require software support to be written into Trainz Plus to take advantage of those features. That support is what we are testing now.

Big advantage it's free, possible disadvantage, it's no longer in development.

True but as the link above says, Plant Factory is just a tool for creating the trees. You can make regular .fbx meshes in whatever modeling program that can take advantage of all the new support being added. It will just be easier using PF.

Sounds like GMax when it was introduced to the Trainz community back in 2001. Many people are still happily using it just fine.
