Placing a loco on a flat truck (as if it were a commodity)

Learning... slowly!
Is it possible to make a loco into a goods load so you can put it on a flat truck?

For example, if I wanted to place a narrow gauge loco such as one of Trainboi's Talyllyn engines onto a lowmac, can that be done?

Well if the lowmac did not have to move, you could put some invisible track on the trailer then put the loco on that!? Adjusting to make it visually entertaining of course. You have to surveyor mode then when in the edit route place your lowmac trailer. Then go to the track tab, from there get the invisible track and place it on the ground next to the lowmac trailer. Then click on the Advanced tab in the track menu and press the little /\ bump looking button. should be adjust spline height. AHHHH then once you have the height figured just move the track on the trailer then place the loco! WA LA.

You could easily make a commodity version of the loco body using an aliased mesh yourself, but putting the wheels in could prove to be more difficult. Theoretically you could use attachment effects and alias the bogey mesh, but the animated nature of the bogies might mean they come out rather oddly.

It would probably be easier to request a commodity version from the original author...

Cheers guys. Looks like it would be quite complicated for someone with little experience modifying content.

edh6, would that be a lot of work for the original author? I've seen enough people acting like gimme pigs and demanding things for free, and I don't want to be like that.

It depends on exactly how the author has modelled the loco, however for one of my locos it would simply require re-exporting from blender and a new config file. If you would like one of my locos as a load I would be happy to oblige - perhaps Linda in Penrhyn condition, thus allowing her journey between the Penrhyn and Ffestiniog railways to be recreated.

There are two meshes involved for your own use build a commodity or product and reference the both the loco and the wheels. You may have to play with the heights so use the attachment maker to add another one or two attachment point to get the heights correct and have two products, one for the wheels and one for the loco.

Another way you could do this would be too use Sketch up and Draw the locomotive & Truck together(Static Display)..Then Learn how to import into Trainz(Ruby T-Mix plug in)

Ed, if you have the free time I'd be very interested to see the results and how it works but please don't feel like I'm demanding anything from you!

Thanks to all for your kind help. I appreciate it!

The general answer is yes. That does however come with a boat load of qualifications.

It means converting the loco to a product along with the bogies if you want them under the loco.

If you don't want the bogies, you'll have to come up with some way to support the loco.
Tying it down is yet another puzzle.

Then there is the "What are you going to use as a transport vehicle"?

Takes a bit of planning, and a lot of time.

But, when all is said and done, Yes, it can be done.

I have yet to come up with a project that can't be done in TRAINZ. It does take lots and lots of planning
and even more time. And to top that off, there are endless projects.

I tried using aliased meshes, but just couldn't get it to work, so in the end I just re-exported a static version from Blender. It could also do with a few chains/ropes and some sleepers for packing, but they shouldn't take long to add.

Ideally it would need LOD implementing, but I'm not sure if it can be done for a product...

Maybe with the weight of a loco, use of Normhart's Railcar 8 axle FM KRL500 flatcar would be suitable for the job.

I have also seen pics of locos mounted on heavy duty freight bogeys, for moving around in workshops, or storage for dismantling.
Cheers,
Mike

That's fantastic. More or less exactly what I'd envisaged! Thanks Ed!

I haven't found time to add the securing chains etc. so I'll upload the asset to the DLS as it is today. I'll be away for 4 weeks form tomorrow without a PC but hopefully I'll have time to add in the chains at some point in the future.
