i have the original R40 slant file from pro trainz i extracted from my cd i brought years ago
what do i need to do if I want to upload this file to the download station
want to do this the right way

Basically you don't.

Check the license if there is one and if you're very lucky it will permit reskins. Clone, edit the texture file slightly then upload the reskin.

Note you can only do this if there is a license that permits reskins and if it's payware there probably isn't. No license in the config.txt means no reskin.

You could also reskin using an alias. Where the config simply just references the meshes from the original asset without including them as a copy in the reskin. The process is detailed in the trainz wiki here: https://online.ts2009.com/mediaWiki/index.php/HowTo/Reskin_an_Asset_using_an_alias

Is the original asset on the DLS? If not you may have a problem.
