Patching-Why does it take so long?

I mean, really! I'm only patching so that the content from TS12 may have a better chance of compatibility with TS2009. Why does it take so long? I am thinking about canceling the patch, but that would mean a lot of wasted time. I sure hope this works...

DO NOT cancel the patch, I repeat, DO NOT CANCEL THE PATCH.

Cancelling will deep-fry your install, and you'll be forced into a re-install.

Once you've started a patch if you stop it part way through you'll corrupt your install.
If your moving assets from 12 to 09 as long as the build isn't over 2.9 they should be ok. Beware the built in assets may not transfer to well.

The updates for Trainz can take a while, since they are working with some fairly big files.

However, the patches for TS12 should only take an hour or two (at the most, under normal circumstances) to complete. The patch may appear to stall part way through, this is normal.

We do not recommend using the computer whilst updates are installing, so as to ensure that there is no interference.

So as to avoid interference, or complications, we do recommend doing the following:Please clear out the Temp folder on your computer. When you are ready to install the patch, disconnect your internet connection and shut down all programs (including anti-virus and similar). Now run the patch. We recommend that you leave the patch to install overnight, and that you do not use the computer whilst the patch is being installed. You may also want to try installing the patch under Safe Mode in Windows.

However, if a patch is already running, do not cancel it, as this may mean you will need to re-install Trainz again.

TS12 patch was done in about 45 minutes last time I re-installed, but at least one of the TS2010 patches takes around 4 hours - there's a lot of data to crunch!

From experience, TS12 patches should take less than 30 minutes on a reasonable speed system - if it is taking longer than this, chances are that you've installed additional content or merged the built-ins from TS2010.

Do check that the Patching Aborted message has not appeared though - if it has, somethings gone pearshaped.

I think he's the one who has a really, really underpowered PC, which might explain the very long time for patching. I'd also be very concerned about disk space too especially with the patching taking this long.

John

That would make sense.

It needs at least 7-8 GB available during patching due to the way it handles the .ja files, as it creates a backup of all affected files.

Shane

P.S. I'm suprised that N3V has not made use of a rollback facility, since backups are created for all modified files.

Good point on the rollback. If the patch is canceled or there's not enough space, the process should quit and clean-up.

Maybe we're asking too much for a game. Wait this isn't a game, it's a serious landscape and world-generating program. :)

I've a feeling that rollbacks is going to be something else on my list for things to sort with N3V.

Shane

That's a good one to add, Shane.

We'll keep feeding the bugs and issues to you, and you'll hand them a huge tome thicker than the greater London phonebook. ;)

I'm under the impression that there is a rollback feature if the patch fails but not if it is cancelled or crashes. Now whether it works or not I can't say but I seem to recall hearing it is there.

William

The rollback feature I think is only if they are doing the JA files as the originals are sitting there until all done. The JA files are the first part of the patching of Trainz.

The patcher does have a rollback feature in it, which I'm pretty sure was added for TS2010 SP3 and newer.

However, this should not be relied upon, as there can be other factors that may prevent it from working. The main ones being firewall/anti-virus blocking it, and Windows itself blocking it.

As said previously by a few people, the TS12 updates should be quick, however they can be slow in some cases, hence it's best to let it sit for as long as possible.
