OpenBVE

CRO

If it ain't broke...!
I've just discovered Open BVE (trainsimframework.org) which is a follow on from the Japanese BVE rail sim.
From what I can gather, this has been set up to make it easier for english speakers to experience BVE.
I have had a quick look at one route - the scenery graphics are detailed but have no impact on frame rates. Cab view has accurate working guages.
Sounds are also great. One major improvement is exterior and tracking views.
Wondered if anybody else has OpenBVE, and can steer me to some worthwhile add-ons and routes.

Hi, I have used openbve for long time. It have better sounds than any other simulator.

Here are the routes: http://wiki.bve-routes.com/index.php/Routes_by_Country (Some are really great, especially the routes from Hungary)

Here is the rolling stock http://wiki.bve-routes.com/index.php/OpenBVE_rolling_stock

Keep in mind most of the content are uploaded there, since OpenBve is a smaller community.

My favourite is the Budapest metro routes avaiable here: http://www.bvemetro.hu/index_en.php

The irish stock is pretty detailed as well: http://www.celtictrainsim.com/ballyfeckinwater.html

Another great simulator is Maszyna EU07 (a freeware polish train simulator with only PKP trains and routes) but has 3d cabs and everything, very realistic when it comes to driving and my personal favourite: http://eu07.pl/

I think BVE sucks as everything need to code unlike Trainz where it is so user-friendly. And after all that effort, very bad graphics! :(

Trainz is so much better. FTW FTW x_x

Stop bashing OpenBve, they made a free software, and I personally enjoy it much more than trainz because of their real life sounds. In trainz they are too quiet and unrealistic.

Graphics aren't bad at all routes... Just some

Best simulator is Mazyna EU07, good graphics, good realism. Railworks is pretty good too

OpenBVE is great for driving, especially if you like UK stuff or London Underground. Totally different use than Trainz, both have benefits.

I just got OpenBVE working a couple of days ago. I enjoy it for the NYC subway. The graphics are not the best but the controls and the sounds are way better than trainz. It was so awesome, I played it all last weekend. I know it will get even better. OpenBVE is an awesome train simulator. And it is free. I have not seen any other simulator that is free with good graphics and realistic sounds and textures like OpenBVE.

WOW !!! i learn something new yet again...........OpenBVE is prototypical, in other words it's real world and not on the pc.

I wondered why my machine couldn't run it........ titter titter snigger

IKB.

Thanks to KorikovaVL80 for those links, and to all the others re other previously unknown stuff.
Must admit I do like the way that the cab rocks from side to side and pitches on stop/starts - Wonder if the boys at N3V could add these effects into Trainz?
Once a Trainzer - always a Trainzer, but it's nice to have some options.

I do like OpenBVE though I admit I'm not experience enough to give any real advice, except that it's free and if you have some time, it's worth trying. Be aware that bvestation.com has a lot of broken links and registering on the site is so irritating I just won't bother. But it's a good sim.

Edit: @CRO, PEV made a "train swayer" for Trainz. I haven't really done much with it as I have a lot on my train-world plate already, but give it a look. I think someone started a thread on it in the General forum in the last day or two. HTH.

First impression

I've not seen this application before. Thanks for the pointers.

Likes: Graphics. Tilting trains. Rain streaked side windows. Zooming trackside camera. Sounds. Light pools from carriage windows showing on tracks. Fine catenary wires. Light effects from signals, sparks etc. Track and trackside details.

Dislikes: Trains appear to side step the rails and run on the ballast on tilting bends .

As seen on this video.

There are better routes on OpenBve than the New York subway. These are pretty low quality in graphics terms.

High quality underground/metro would be the Budapest metro, japanese metro, and Hong Kong transit.

Tsuen Wan Line (Hong Kong) http://wiki.bve-routes.com/index.php/Tsuen_Wan_Line

Island line (Hong Kong) http://wiki.bve-routes.com/index.php/Island_Line_(Hong_Kong)

Jubilee Line (London Ungerground) http://wiki.bve-routes.com/index.php/London_Underground_Jubilee_Line

PZMA (Budapest Metro) http://wiki.bve-routes.com/index.php/Budapest_PZMA_(Kozma_utca_-_Árpád_tér)

These are all high quality lines (far better in graphics than New York subway) with great sounds. (If you don't believe me look at the screenshots)

Some of the Japanese, Hungarian and UK are the best out there for OpenBve, so if you like US stuff it's not pretty great as it doesn't have too much stuff from there.

I almost forgot... Here is a site for Polish rolling stock and routes for OpenBve, these are excellent as well: http://bve.e6.pl/

On the Trainz side, Auran/N3V should really improve the driving experience and sounds.

Not wanting to start a flame war but let me ask you, if you like BVE and tried to bash Trainz in your post, then why are you still posting here? Isn't it natural for people to be hanging around with the things they like? -.-

I don't play OpenBVE but I know of another Train Community who are busily developing Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit's system. Yes another subway system up for simulation soon. So far the routes are far from done, scenery and station details omitted but the trains can still run so yea its playable. Still would like you guys to take a look. :)

I would really appreciate if you could give them your support to their new routes and trains as I think they have put in lots of effort into coding in everything although the quality isn't there. Announcements included too(wonder if other routes include them):)

Yeah, your right. No need to start a war here (I loose on most anyway since I'm new haha)... A favourite train simulator really depends on the person who is playing it. Personally I would like to have a simulator with the driving abilities of railworks, route building abilities of trainz, and sound abilities from BVE, but probably not going to happen...

Sure I will, always great to see there is development on new metro routes. I'll check the site, and besides, many asian metro/underground transit systems for OpenBve are of great quality (I've been in Singapore but that was 19 years ago, when I was 1 year so I don't remember anything) :)

OpenBVE is very good, though you have to gather quite a few subsidiary utilities before you can run it.

Sadly, both BVE and OpenBVE lack a graphical route/scenario editor such as the ones in Trainz or R.......ks, you have to code the csv document and even scenery, landscape etc. has to be formed out of a 3D model before referencing via the csv. However there are some very good routes - try the northern ECML from Newcastle to Berwick, the East Lincs Line or the new Irish routes which have appeared.

A big advantage of OpenBVE over the original BVE, is that the former allows you to "mix 'n' match" routes and trains without having to set up separate files for each run.

One bad point though:

BVE can't couple/decouple carriages and you can't do shunting in there.

So your imaginations to your session types are limited. Point A to Point B only allowed.

I used to have BVE4 not open as I never worked out how to get it working. I have seen many videos on you tube of it and I do prefer Trainz for the simple reason you can expand a route build you own in minutes and have people boarding etc. Bve is good sound effects but not as fun as Trainz. I also tried MSTS once but not anymore.

Open BVE is I suppose an improvement on the original in that you can have outside the cab views and nice enough in it's own way. Apart from arguing on graphics it is howvere far more limited than Trainz. Indeed Trainz has far more flexibility, easy to build and load, unload, or do whatever. Buidling is very easy. So Open BVE has it's deserved niche but to compare with us here a bit wrong.
