Once Again the great DLS Update destroys a route

I keep telling myself not to do it but again I ignored my thoughts and decided to download the few updates for the assets in a map I have been working on for a long time. There was only about 8 assets involved but 2 of them were ground textures.

To my abdolute horror, when I opened the map the main ground colour had turned a horrible green instead of the mellow yellows blended carefully with other textures to give an overall Autumn appearance.

When somebody decided to update the build from 1.3 to 2.9 they decided to change the tga texture file to a green and brown instead of the dark yellow and brown in the original. The original kuid numbers were retained on the 2 kuids but the had become kuid2 versions and the names had changed. What they did was to make new textures using the original numbers which should have been given new kuid numbers instead.

kuid:68787:21664 called Gras34 has become kuid2:68787:21664:12 now called HP-Gras12
kuid:68787:21720 called Gras44 has become kuid2:68797:21720:14 now called HP-Gras14

I have spent hours trying to get my original appearance back. I tried opening the textures for edit to try to 'revert to original' but this option was not available, only 'revert'. I deleted the new versions in the hope that my old textures would come back but this has only been a part success. I altered the config file of the map to restore the original numbers but CMP shows the new kuid2 numbers as missing dependancies although the old textures returned. I now opened the map in surveyor and used 'delete missing assets but the map is still not correct since one of the textures now shows as the grid pattern (missing).

I am struggling on to try to recover fully my original map, but I am absolutely fed up with problems caused by downloading asset updates only to find that in many occasions these updates are themself faulty or that a different asset has been used with the original number when it should have been a different kuid.

Beware, it is often difficult to get back to where you were, even if you have CDP's and copies of your map with different names. It looks likely that I am going to loose 2 days work by having to use an older CDP and re-do the changes

I've noticed similar things with a couple of updates today.

I installed the two updates (one was for magicland's RDC) and they both came up faulty.

Is it possible to create CDPs of these textures using your TR2006 version and put them into your current version. This may be clutching at straws. I stopped updating assets after I started getting script errors on built in layouts.

Ken

If you have it on a back up then use that and don't bother with any updates. or you can deleted all the errors and start over with new ones.

To anser your question Ken yes it is but its very hard to do becuse thay will go failty as soon as you start to update to a new TRS. and thats TRS06 can go to TRS9 but anthing more then that and yours risking a lot if headacks.
I don't bother update older maps with out haveing to rebuild almost everything. I ones updtated a route form TRS 06 to 12 but I had to change almost everything.
I hope i'm been a bit help full here.

Ahh a fellow sufferer!
Yes I had the same problem about two weeks ago, had a minor rant in another unrelated thread thread about it somewhere.
Somewhat annoyed as I have used it heavily in my route, it was ideal in many locations, pretty much went through the same as you have but in the end decided to replace it. The replacement texture isn't ideal but at least it doesn't look as stupid and out of place as HP-Gras 12 does!
Have you come across the reflective ones yet? and the black ones? and the one that crashes Trainz and the one that obliterates the texture?
I'm keeping well clear of any texture updates now and making and using using many of my own to replace older textures that are likely to suffer future sabotage!
I've been saving to cdp every couple of hours now to avoid any more time consuming mishaps. I've also saved all the assets used so far into cdps of each type so I can get them back again if need be.

The 68787 updates caused me no end of grief on my current WIP route, in my case it was rock textures, but again the image on the 'update' was an entirely different image which totally destroyed the appearance of cuttings.

For a purely local route it's easy enough to delete the update, the original texture will then appear again. If you mean to distribute the route though the only option is to delete/disable every affected texture and re-texture using something different...

I have a couple of similar texture problems as well and it is annoying.

What I found is that the original texture is still in CM plus the new "totally different" texture of course. So I made a clone of the original texture I used and then suing the Replace function in Surveyor replaced the new "totally different" textures with my Clone texture of the original.

This generally worked for my route with a few areas I have to fix up. While this will only work with a route that is for personal use it could be a temporary measure until you find the original texture again in the updates for routes that are to be released.

It's a pain in the *&(*

Hope this helps.

The 68787 updates ...

NO!! NEVER but NEVER update anything this guy (68787) "updates." It'll be different almost every time. I don't think he knows what UPDATE means.

Whenever I have an asset that I update, you can bet your bottom dollar it'll be the same thing, just improved, like eliminating flashing, correcting a mistake, etc. I never would replace one of my assets with another one.

Good luck with fixing your route.

I totally agree with Dave, I had so many headaches with stuff by 68787 (lotharhake), that I refuse point blank to download
or use anything of theirs in anything I build, not just the textures.

Has anybody written to Herr Hake and told him what problems he has been causing?

Perhaps he would be willing to unscramble the mess by updating yet again but with the original textures reinstated.

No response to emails on this and other subjects. It could be a language problem though...

I don't:-, but it's not enough to just not update the local machine. On a distributed route any third party user is likely to update and as the OP states, a beautifully blended scene becomes a kindergarten chicken-scratch of mis-matched textures. I now have all his built-in textures disabled, which is a damned shame, there's a lot of nice stuff among them...

This situation is a complete shame, Lothar's a skilled creator and I can't imagine these changes were a mistake. The KUID system allows for almost infinite numbering, so I have to wonder if this is no more than childish subterfuge?

This could be a defense mechanism to prevent his work being "referenced" by a payware route.

You can of course clone the original asset then replace it in the route with your clone to avoid such problems.

Hi guys,

We are (obviously) concerned about the robustness of the Download Station. If you have strong reason to believe that somebody is actively attempting to "pollute" the Download Station (including by deliberately damaging their own content) then please get in touch with our Helpdesk with clear examples. We take this kind of thing seriously and if we agree with your analysis and the creator in question does not have a clear explanation of their actions, we may take further steps. This may potentially include banning the creator in question from uploading further content to the Download Station.

(For the record: I have not personally investigated any of these claims. I'm just stating our policy wrt/ abuse of the Download Station.)

kind regards,

chris

Hi Chris

I honestly don't believe there is anyhting malicious here. The new textures are all good stuff, many of them with really nice high-res images. The issue is simply that in many cases the image in the latest revision bears no resemblance to the image used in earlier revisions of the same kuid. I suspect an innocent mix-up or a misunderstanding of the review process is the culprit...

Rrgh. I don't believe it is Lothar's stuff, but I've got some cliff textures I'm using that are nearly as shiny as Dave Snow's new grain silos at the right angle. I've got to go through and redo all of my cuts to get rid of the mirrored cliffs.

Yes, I think I should clarify that the black, shiny and the self destruct ones were not Lothars but varied creators, may even be due to the DLS repair program and the "fixer hasn't bother to check in game" problem, however the different textures using the same kuid that have surfaced so far are.

I'm not convinced either that in Lothars case it is anything other than an oversight, given the large numbers of updates he has done lately, it is quite possible to have inadvertently used a kuid twice if you have multiple installs and don't keep them in sync.
