Objects Disappeared

I was building a route with Trainz 12 and was almost done. It was quite an extensive route. I loaded up the route today to continue work on it and while the landscaping, water and painted land was as it should be, all the objects are gone. No tracks, no buildings, nothing. Anyone have any clues as to what happened if and if I can recover it? Because if not I am done with this simulator.

Thanks,
Brandon

A couple of possibilities:
  • Have you placed your disappeared objects in a session layer, saved the route and then, when later reloading, opened it by selecting "Edit Route"?
If this is the case then you must, after saving your route, reload by selecting "Edit Session" (click the route to be edited, then click the Sessions button on the bottom right, then select the session to edit and click Edit Session). You are not the first to fall into this trap and it has been, at various times, a source of many a heated argument in these forums. For a more detailed "discussion" of this see the thread http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=69554&highlight=editing+routes
  • Have you (inadvertently) hidden the layer(s) with your disappeared objects?
If so (or simply to check) open the Layer tool and click on any Eye icon that looks closed or faded.

i have suffered from this in ts2010 and lost my whole route just bcz of this and i am sure this is layer misbehave that handed me a big loss

I wouldn't agree that it is a "misbehave" like a mistake or a bug, but it is a "feature" that could and should have been explained a lot better than it was. The need to load and edit a session instead of a route is a continuation of the way that Trainz 2006 operated but with the addition of route layers and session layers which, in my opinion, has caused the confusion and problems.

Chill Brandon, ;) It most likely is just a layer problem, but even if you did manage to delete it all there are backups galore in the Trainz folders.
I can't for the life of me get my head around this layer in a session for a route layer for the route session layer on the session layer of routes??????.
This is why I still use 06.

Yet 06 has a similar problem (although less confusing) with routes and sessions being saved separately and many an unwary layout creator losing all their industry settings because they edited the route and not the session.

09 - 12 has the same concept of routes and sessions but because the "Edit Route" option appears before the "Edit Session" option in the hierarchy of menu screens the trap is easier to fall into. At least in 06 you did not lose any physical assets (buildings, trees, etc) if you edited the wrong thing.

Not the same at all. if I add something in the session layer, it stays in the session layer and not in the route where it should be. If I set the drivers up in the route then they stay there and not in the session and so on so on. It just gets so very unnecessarily confusing all the time when all you want to do is build your route and set the industries up before you jump in a cab to try it out. Now you find your signals are set up over there, your industries set up round the corner and your drivers are playing hide and seek in the many other various layers and what not. Not to mention buildings and trees and weather and tracks that all want there own secret layers so they can only appear when you select the route and session you never knew you had, and....and......and.....

There has certainly been an endless debate on layers and a certain amount of conflicting advice. I think the best solution is to follow a set procedure to lessen the chances of lost work. You should do all your work in "Edit Route" except the following which should be done in "Edit Sessions" Everything in the locomotive tab, session rules including driver commands etc! and configuring your industries/track. There can be exceptions to this but by and large this is the safest course of action. A number of Tranzers edit a route from a session but I think it is better to edit a route directly from the Route screen. This avoids the risk of clicking the "edit session" button instead of "edit route" without realising it. There can be other reasons for losing your work such as insufficent space on your hard drive. Better to check from time to time or more frequently if it is getting a bit full.

Objects found in session but...

I finally found a session for my route that has all the objects and what not complete. How do I get it to work for the sureveyor in order to finish the route? I tried to merge the two but the session isn't listed when I click on the merge option.
