NVidea Driver "upgrade"

Yesterday I upgraded the NVidea driver of my Asus gtx550ti video card to the latest non beta level. What could go wrong. Thank Microsoft for System Restore. There was much to much stuttering/hesitation, no matter how I changed various settings in Trainz. I am now restored to the previous driver and once again all is well.

Live and learn, or if it is not broke don't fix it? Yeah, I think you only update/upgrade when needed, not wanted. Learn that a lot with stuff at work, had enough corrupt databases and graphics to prove it.

Don't do Beta's but do all upgrade as they are notified, never have problems.

A lot of the NVIDIA upgrades simply update the optimization of supported games, generally new ones. So if you don't have a game, don't bother upgrading, or, as pdkoester says"if it is not broke don't fix it". I find the worst upgrades seem to be WIN 7 security patches - they often do funny things to currently installed programs, including Trainz.

It depends too on the card. For my GTX680 the latest driver turns out to be better than the previous, again this is released drivers and not beta. Beta software is okay, but drivers are not as far as I'm concerned. Drivers go too deep into the system.

One of the things that does help, though, when upgrading display drivers is refreshing the DirectX 9.0c install. Every time I upgrade my video drivers, I run Shane's little utility to refresh the DX drivers. This ensures that everything meshes together properly, if this could be a technical term.

Sometimes with Nvidia upgrades to avoid problems you need a clean install, remove old then add new, can be done with the installer. I always check with the Nvidia forums before updating to see what if any problems there are, usually give it a couple of weeks after an update is released to give time for the complaints to get posted. Don't need to use system restore to revert a driver, just go to device manager and roll back the driver.
