NS Pittsburgh Sub (Large Pics)

What is it about you Aussies that makes you guys incredible at modeling the American backwoods? :p

Awesome work, scratchy; keep the screens coming!

Is copy and paste of trees detrimental to framerates ?

The last shot needs a signal bridge on "Cold Curve" ... It is located or on the sweeping curve that preceeded "S" curve.

There is signal tower in the middle of the "AG" compound "S" curves, just before Bennington "BF".

What is your method of laying curvitures, letting trainz make the curve, or using radius gauges and applyng many spline points ? I found that at least three to four spline points make up a curve ... and all curves, and opposing curves, have a striaght track joining the curves.

I have no idea, guess we'll have to find out, surly it can be worse then planting them all in total random:)

Yep i think i have that down, theres a signal bridge just behind the trees if thats what you mean, i've found someones blog whos taken a cab ride and got photos of every tower and signalbridge from Altoona to Pittsburgh:D

Yep got that too

My curves usually just have one spline point between the two straightened sections- seems to work pretty well for me:)

Also thanks for that image of Cresson on your PRR thread, that will help me alot.
I have some people working on some custom content to come my way, which will help fill in some of the gaps in the route, so stay tuned!:) Also if anyone else feels inspired and wants to make something, (eg, rusty signalbridges, landmarks and buildings) feel free to contact me
Thanks:wave:

I have found that when laying a 14 mile, 4 tracked gradient, by the time you get to the end, all your spline points have slightly diffrent heights, as well as at the "Curve".

So I applied th exact prototypical gradients to #4 Track (the outside WB Track) all the way to the end of the route. Then I measure the height of each spline pont on that #4 Track, and apply that same spline point heght to the other 3 adjacent spline points ... and so on ... with each and every section of track. It provides for a smooth long consistant gradient.

Do you need a detailed map of MO-UN-AR-SF Wye and BF Grade Separation(s) ? I will post that in PRR Screenshots thread when it is done.

Wow, that really is doing it to the book!:)
This would be because each of the track lengths are different when going round a corner, the outside track on a curve should be at a slightly less grade then the inner most one because it has more of a distance to go to the next spline point. So if you really wanted to do it exactly i think the best bet would be to apply the grade to the track in the middle. Hope this helps.:D

The fence around the "Curve" has always been a pointy spiked top 5' fence to discourage trespassing, and the loco fence has always been 8 foot tall cyclone wire, topped with 3 strands of barbed wire (even though, in the middle of the night, thieves scrabled over top, and stole the PRR #1361 bell and whistle, ran a bulldozer through the Gift Shoppe doors, and burnt down the old 1900's wooden caboose in the parking lot).

I stand partialy corrected ... When the old stone flanked flagpole, the old 197 RR tie steps, the gazebo was torn out, the new lighted steps, and funicular was installed ... the old wrought iron fence was replaced with a new (identical) aluminium pointy toped spiked fence, as well as the same type around the GP9.

Your route looks great by the way, and I can't wait to get a look at the trackwork spline points and gradients ... even if I do have to upgrade to 09/10.

Gone is the old PRR signal bridge at MP 241.7, in liue of the new fangled safetrain signal bridge and modern colored signals.

The rock cliff is a dark ignious type granite, with weeds and brush growing out of the outcropping ... I camped out on top of the rock cliff in 1977, and got no sleep, all night long ... confounded squeeling noisy trains on the "Curve" !

Most serious railfans have given up going to the "Curve" as it is all grown up with trees, and they charge admission (even if you walk up), and there is no longer any "Track Shack" food consession stand nor ice cream stand ... and places like Cresson Park, Galitzin Park and Cassandra RR Overlook are better for viewing trains.

I used to think of the Horseshoe as the one and only mecca of railfaning spots ... but in actuality the entire East & West Slope is quite an interesting 37 mile long gradient up and over the Allegheny Front Range.

A band of diehard railfans (Yahoo Groups Altoona Johnstown) chase each and every train up and over the mountain, taking photos and videos of the same train in several different locations.

Many once popular photo locations (such as Alto, Slope, UN, AR, MG, MO) are now strictly off limits, and RR Police strictly enforce the no trespassing laws, and have posted no parking signs, with ejection, fines, and detention while you are logged into the RR police database.

Great job Rich. I like the variation in trees. I will also upload your pictures later today or tomorrow to the site.

Cool, I really like the way you've set everything out on your site- looks very professional. Can't wait for some of that PRR steam to be released...
I will have that module finished by the end of the week for you to put up as well, I was like 99% done then the computer crashed (faceplam) got an area of about 300m2 to scenic left:)

Wow, I'm not even sure Perth has RR police (not that I has much of a rail system in the first place) we just have the transit guards on the suburban trains to the city, but they seem to do a pretty good job of keeping the vandalism and crime to a minimum, nothing like when i lived in Sydney when it was actually scary to have to take a train by yourself at night...
