NS derailment August 6 2012 4:30pm EST

Hazmat crews and the evacuation of nearby homes is pretty standard procedure when a derailment happens, even if it is just to deal with any diesel spillage. Reports I've seen said that none of the tanker cars appear to be leaking, and there were no reported injuries either. 18 cars derailed in total apparently, mostly tankers and what looks like hoppers of some kind. Track damage looks pretty substantial though, with the adjacent line also being damaged. Still, it'd need to be a lot worse than that before Tony Scott would get on the blower to Denzel for a sequel.

Shouldn't be a bad clean up for them, what with being right next to the road and such.

 Now is a good time to consider your safety when taking pictures and videos of trains.

Notice how all the cars piled up on the outside of the curve? They lay almost 40-feet off the mainline...I guarantee that had you been even standing on the road when the crash occurred, unless you were expecting trouble your legs would have stopped working and you would not have moved from whatever spot you stood.

Had you been within striking distance it would have sucked to be you!

For that reason, it is always better to film, stand inside the curve.

That's a very good point and something to consider if getting close to the tracks to photograph stuff is your thing, although there is no denying that if you were unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, in such circumstances the last photograph you ever took would be a really dramatic one, just before that 90,000lb hopper car and its 30,000lbs of coal landed on top of you LOL

I tried to get down there for some pics, but Barney said that was a no no. Unless they go through the church property, they may have a hard time accessing the RR from the little two lane road that is there. Of course, they could come from the road above, but that is even smaller, and sits about 15ft above the rail lines. This is the main line through the area, and is used by amtrak, as well as NS and CSX.

The Phosphoric acid cars were empty, but there were some cars leaking Propane (said in a Hank Hill voice), Barney said that was why everyone was evacuated.
