NS defect detector

Anyone know where I can find a defect detector for Trainz that actually speaks "Norfolk Southern"? The one on the DLS is just a generic one. I would like to add some to my NS route from central NJ to central PA.

jointed rail has one, when you apply it to the track make sure you click on the question mark in surveyor and then click on the defect detector you just placed. then select Norfolk Southern

I just tried it and you can select different railroads but it doesn't say the railroad name in Trainz when you use it. But, the voices for Norfolk Southern, etc. are in the folder where the voice clips are in the file contents. Why won't the railroad name speak?

If I recall correctly the sounds for the detector were taken directly from a real detector owned by Norfolk Southern. Being that Norfolk Southern owns it, it would make sense that the detector wouldn't have the sound files for other railroad's names. So it uses initials like "U" "P" for Union Pacific or "B" "N" for Burlington Northern etc.

No, I mean it has the voice files for the individual railroads, but they won't play in Trainz when you select a railroad name in properties. What's the purpose in selecting a railroad name in properties?

Sorry rwk, but I think I know what you mean now. Is it that the detector will announce everything other than the railroad name?

Mine worked great:clap: Selected Norfolk Southern, entered the mile post, worked like a champ. Did not say Norfolk Southern, but then again, it is on a NS line. Also liked knowing the number of axles, in case I lose one, train speed and length. Going to play with the other selections. All in all, a great asset.

the names should save just as the milepost or anything else. be sure you are editing while on the right layer... it will say any of the names listed.

Are you saying norfolksouthern that it's supposed to say the railroad names? What am I doing wrong? I have all the options turned on.

it does say the name, or the letters of. for instance BNSF would say:

"B-N-S-F RAILWAY" - etc. etc. if you set these options in surveyor in your session and save you will hear them.

Thank you NS37, I thought it did but couldn't remember. I was about to go run a train on the S-Line to refresh my memory. These are just to sweet. I combine mine with Joe's AEI tag reader. +1 to you for making these.

To NS37, I tested the detector with my TS2010(44088) and for some reason or another will not say the railroad name. Instead of saying "Norfolk Southern Milepost..." it will just say "Milepost...". Essentially it says everything but the railroad name. However it is a curious problem as I have used it in TS2009SP4 and it said the name just fine. It makes me wonder wether or not there is a version related bug present(Note: I still use build 44088 because I can't properly kick cars in the latest patch). I've noticed it for a while, but never used the detector enough for it to bother me(don't get me wrong though, I love the detector when I do use it).

I'm having the same problem. I'm using TS2010. I thought of a workaround, rename the Norfolk Southern sound clip "milepost" and possibly use a sound editor to combine the Norfolk Southern speech with milepost so that when Trainz triggers it to say "milepost" it will say "Norfolk Southern milepost". I only plan to use it on a Norfolk Southern based route so I don't really need the other railroad names.

Ok then, what is the correct way to get it to say the railroad names? Why are the voices in the library then? "Norfolk Southern", "B N S F", etc.? I assume you are the creator of the defect detector? Then you should know how it works. Did it say the railroad names for you? It just says Detector, milepost, etc in the beginning even if I preselect a railroad name. I tried renaming the sound clips in the library detector to detectorr, and rrnorfolksouthern to detector, and yes it plays Norfolk Southern in the detector, but the word Southern gets cut off by the word milepost, and it says Norfolk Southern as the end where it shouldn't, like it's supposed to say detector out.

if you select the rr name in surveyor edit-session mode and session layer (TS09 and 10) and save your session then when you trip the detector will say those names.

if you are using the latest TS12 you can save this to your route layer and it will be in all your sessions. the latest version of TS12 is the only version that allows saving this data into the route layer.

I tried that and still no names. I noticed if I select BNSF it will say RAILWAY Detector Milepost...the others it starts out with Detector Milepost.... what I am doing is starting a blank one square route, lay some track, place a locomotive down, save, edit as session, then place dragging defect detector, select RR name, turn all of the voices on, save, save session, enter drive mode, move locomotive, detector starts to speak but no RR name comes out, for BNSF it will say RAILWAY before the word Detector, for CSX it will say EQUIPMENT for the others it will just say Detector Milepost...
